Hey I finally got the opportunity to do this project and the Rear Lights are beautiful. I was considering getting the clear tail lights but forget it now. The rear lights are perfect and bright

I think that is a wise choice. I have the clears and have searched all
over for replacement bulbs(as spares) and can't find them. BTW when
I do, it is the same set up in the clear lights and both can light up.
Thanks again to Sprog for his 'enlightening' info....

I have "Altezza" tail lights on my old car and have bought colored bulbs online. Try NOPI.com ( other auto parts stores on line) and search for bulbs. They have all bulb sizes you can think of. Also you can buy these cool LED Bulbs which create a rotating effect when on and they flash when you apply the breaks kind of like the formula one cars in the rain. Really neat!!!!!

Just did the rear light mod, holy jeezus is it cool looking. Rocket, Sprog, et al, major tip of the hat for ingenuity. Anyway as far as rotating LED lights go, i have em on my bike, they're cool looking, but seem to confuse the hell out of drivers.....as the blinking when you hit the brakes they either A) panic stop or B) get confused and it ends up as a near miss....just my 2 cents...
Alex-Blazing away tail gaters (thanks sprog!)

I can't think of any possible reason that it would cause trouble. If you somehopw managed to get the toggle for the rear fogs, then keep them hooked up. Otherwise, nothing should happen.

I will do this mod this weekend. Sounds simple except for the testing part. If I can't find a tennis racket to jam in the seat I will just have to convince the wife to come out in the garage and step on the brake pedal. Maybe the necklace for xmas will soften her up a bit and she will give me a hand. Thanks for the tips and I will be looking for all the other really bright Mini brake lights ouyt there from now on.

I've got the MINI-Madness rear taillight covers on now, and with the rear fog as brake light it looks BEAUTIFUL! Just a heads up to anyone considering.

Did this mod and it works great. This should have been factory done by MINI for the North-American versions.

I was thinking of using the lower red light for running, and the upper red light for brake light. To do this, would I just have to jump the trace from the lower 'brake' signal to the rear fog light positive, and then cut the trace going to the lower brake after the jumper? Therefore, fusing requirements would still be met, and each bulb would have its' own purpose

Here's a pic I took of a MINI drive. A group of us in Chicago did this mod a couple months back. Definitely a must.

Has anyone tried their hazards after doing this mod? I'd like to know if the extra load affects the turn signal or hazard light flash rate?

There is no effect on the turn signals or hazards at all.

Last week I couldn't spell enjinneer, now i are wun.

Don't mess around with paper clips or tape, do it like this if you want a trouble free job...Just did mine, it took less than 1/2 hour. I did NO cutting or use of wire nuts or tape.

If you take the little white plastic clip off the connector, you can then take the no. 1 wire out by using a little pressure on the silver metal connector end, (use a fine knife point). There is a small metal collar which you can pry open with your thumb nail. Next get a 2'' piece of plastic coated wire, strip 1/4'' off each end exposing the wire, slip one end of stripped wire under the small metal collar and crimp closed with pliers. Push the no.1 wire back in the connector and take out the no. 4 wire and go through the same procedure, connecting the other end of your stripped 2'' wire. Push the no. 4 wire back into the connector, replace the white plastic clip and reconnect the modified connector. Do the same thing to the other light assembly. You'll have a very clean job with all your wires left as original. It's totally reversible with no damage to original parts. Use fine wire for your 2'' jumper. Ron.

Just did mine and this is an awesome mod. Took all of 10 minutes.
I used a couple of automotive quick splice connectors. No cutting, bending, or splicing. Just insert wires #1 and #4 and clamp down on the connector. Voila! Blinding tail lights. There's no excuse for someone not seeing you stop now.

Thanks for posting your method sirron, it was easier than slicing into the existing wiring and still made safe, solid connections.

However, I have found that there is a problem with this modification in general.

I've been looking in my mirror at the lit up faces of the non MINI drivers behind me. Frankly speaking, some of them are pretty scary looking in the reddish glow. I
may have to get used to driving with the mirror set to deflect these visions.
