I just remembered seeing a pic of a mini with a spoiler on the hatch, just below the window.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
I think that would work to break the rear drag, and keep the hatch clean. But the hatch also seems flimsy and problematic, and I don't know if it can handle the weight of a spoiler in the middle and the air pushing on it.

And on my Neon I had a wing that looked like this:

on the edge of the trunk (regular place for a spoiler on all sedans) it was OEM from Chrysler. I don't think it added down force, but it did cut down on drag, and made the rear of the car, especially the window, 95% cleaner.

Dude... That is thee gayest thing I've ever seen. Even if it magically added torque, still no. I guess we each have our own tastes; but please tell me you were joking.
The M7 should add some down force, since the attack angle is adjustable, I just dont know how much. More down force in the rear would actually create LESS UNDERSTEER since there would be a larger contact patch for the rear tires on the track. Similarly, a heavier rear sway bar keeps a larger contact patch of the rear tires on the road by keeping the inside rear tire from lifting away from the track in a turn, and thus minimizes understeer.

Are you sure?
More understeer is created when the rear tires are stuck to the road more. Which is why we overcome this by inflating the rear tires to have more psi and thus less traction, and second by braking when going into a turn to throw the weight to the front and off the rear wheels.

I'm still slightly confused how a rear sway bar prevents under steer, but it works. And I know it has to do with the stiffness of the bar, not the weight.

Right, by weight I meant stiffness, as in it takes more LBs of force twist the bar. I might be off in my logic on this but Im pretty sure Im accurate. Might have to wait for one of the full time track guys to chim in now.

It was my understanding that much of the front wheel drive understeer is caused by body roll thus putting most of the weight of the car on the OUTSIDE tires in a turn, so much so that you can get the inside tires to lift off the track in a hard corner. With a stiffer rear swaybar you get less body roll, so the weight of the car is more evenly distributed between the outside and inside tires, more contact means more grip and therefore better rotation through the corner. Same should go for downforce added from a wing, downforce = contact = grip = rotation through the corner.
Adding PSI to the rear tires does get the back end looser but in a different way. By adding pressure to the rear tires you are trying to break the back tires loose and "drift" it around the corner, which works as well, it is just a different approach to fixing the same issue.

Not really aftermarket, but it isn't stock. JCW spoiler, on a '02 MCS. I didn't care much for it when I bought the MINI, cause I thought it looked like I was trying to hard. After a year of getting to know my MINI, and seeing what others have done, I love it. I guess I was wanting more of a stock look when I got her, but I would have eventually grown tired of stock, and started modding. I like it because it's sort of simple, yet sportier than stock. I have a friend that has a GP, and while his MINI looks great, I personally don't care for the spoiler. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I had a GP!

I do like what you did R53MAO! Looks great!
