Interior/Exterior Tinting questions for VA
#1
In VA the maximum tint for the rear window is 35% and for the front window 50%.
Has anyone had and problem with being pulled over with 25% tint in the rear and 35% in the front?
Has anyone had any problems with being pulled over for tinted tailight in Virginia.
I live around Richmond VA so any stories from that area would be great.

I got stopped once for having an aftermarket windshield sunshade (4" tint at the top) and had to remove it right there or get a ticket.
Needless to say, I removed it.
I think you'd get pulled sooner for the window tint than for the taillight. But, something to think about here - when you tint the taillight lense, you're reducing the light output. Someone behind you may not see your brake lights - especially on a sunny day - and hit you from behind.
And since tinted taillight lenses are technically illegal in VA, guess who gets to pay for ALL the repairs? Hint - it WON'T be the guy that hit you!
Sorry to be a spoilsport, but having been a licensed VA inspector in the past, these laws are geared towards safety. And if you look at them with an open mind, they make a lot of sense.

Yeah I understand what you are saying but since I am getting a Red mini the tinted taillights going from black to red should stand out more since they are set against a red background.
Instead of just being a slightly brighter red on a red background they are going to go from black to bright red against a red background.

I haven't seen a law that says tinting the rear lights are illegal. All I can find is a law that says the lights must be visible from something like 1000ft away when the conditions are clear.
Yes, I have been stopped for the tint on the lights before, but after I looked into it some, I decided to put them back on. It's been nearly a year now since I was pulled over for them.

I live in Glen Allen and got busted (illegal tint, no front plate) by the VA State Police on 295 back in March while driving to work

I basically cheated... I live in NC where the tint laws are strict. I had the car tinted as dark as legally allowed. Then purchased the MINI rear and side sunshades. The shades are awesome. They are shaped to exactly fit both the rear and side windows. It gives the car a legal limo look in the back.

>>what are the sunshades... how much.. pic? part #? I've never heard of them
I will try and find more info, It's been awhile since I ordered them. I ordered them from Canada and had them shipped. It wasn't cheap something like $200 dollars. They aren't available here at least they weren't when I ordered them. Funny thing is the Canada dealership didn't stock them so they had to order them from Europe. So my sunshades have been around the world almost!

Found the info on the shades...
Rear: B51 46 0 140 530
Side: B51 46 0 142 578
Unlike what the picture shows you can see out without a problem.

Basically to get back on topic if you want dark windows and want to stay legal in picky states like VA and NC, the shades are a viable if not expensive alternative.
