Sun Visor and "oh crap" handle

Has anyone attempted to take the side sun visor and "oh crap" handle from the 05 model and retro fit them into an earlier model?

The 04's might have the screw holes already under the fabric. I am just not brave enough to look.

For the handle to support any weight, it has to be "screwed into" a welded support in the roof under the headliner. Just like the attachment points are there for the roof rack. I doubt that the 04's and earlier have these mounting points UNLESS the handles were an option or available in some foreign country. If anyone in a foreign country has a 2004 or earlier with a grab handle or sunvisor let us know.

I've heard that these will interfere with the airbags in the pre-05 models. Don't know for sure, but that's what I've heard

Ah! I did not even think about the "airbags" or sausages for side head impact protection.

You should be able to check about the air bag. If the part number for the 2005 side curtain bag is different, it might give some credence to the interference theory. If it is the same part number, I don't buy the rumor.

Ditto that. It may be a only rumor, but its a long-standing one. Perhaps we'll be seeing an update on this some day soon????? (hint-hint) Most of us never checked if this was viable as the handles just recently appeared with the '05s.

I do know a guy who does fantastic PDR here in the area who drives an MCS. He probably knows what's under that headliner in the way of support structure (...he did some work on my '03 up there). And he'd know about the "oh crap" handles on the '05s, too. I could give him a call.

That would be great jds. We'd appreciate any info.

My wife would have appreciated the oh crap handle on her first ride on the Dragon.

Just so you know the side-visor may be not as thrilling as you think. I find it reduces headroom by about 0.5"-1" where it matters the most - right above my head! I still have plenty of head room but I suspect I wouldn't bump my head over particularly hard bumps if it weren't there. I don't dislike it being there, but I also don't have a huge need for it - I wear sunglasses any time the sun is out at all and I'm going to be driving.

side visor extender

The visors in the MINI are almost too small to be anything more than a place to have those lighted mirrors. I was at AutoZone yesterday and found one of those visor extensions for about $3.50. This is the kind that clips to the existing visor and flips down to give additional protection from the sun. What I liked about it is that it also has a swivel AND a slide, so I can move it as the sun moves. I guess if worse comes to worse, I COULD clip it to my side window, and slide it as the sun moves, too.

Good call. Will have to check into it. Any chance they sell something like that for the oh crap handles too?
