Replacement Mirror cap installation

I've purchase the checker outside mirror caps from my Mini dealer, but now I can't figure out how to get the original ones off. Can anyone help me understand the technique? I don't want to break the old ones in case I ever want to use them again.
Thanks

I just thought that these 'covers' went right over the original. No?

There are 5 clips holding them on. 3 at the top and 2 at the bottom. You only need to work with the top 3.

If you position the mirror forward and shine a torch in the gap you should be able to see them.

I used 3 bendy knives (others have used a spoon) to lever off each clip. The mirror cup will then roll off forward.

Putting the new mirror cup on is a straight reversal as the removal. Clip on the bottom clips and roll it back to to clip the upper ones.

Be careful not to drop the levers or the mirror on the door, I had my wife hold both the levers I wasn't working on and the cup.

In my experience the passenger side is a lot easier to remove as the drivers side has one clip (furthest from the car) which is very short and hard to lever.

Thanks

 Thanks guys this is great help. I knew basically how to do it, but it turns out I was pushing the tabs in the wrong direction. Just what I was afraid of. The spoon idea might work better than a screwdriver too.

Please post pics when you're done! I saw the caps in the accessories catalog and really liked them.

Thanks!
