Yah I got a nice big lathe that I can use. I was just curious, so I could decide an approximate on a cut .

I figure the hooks I can cut out of some 1" plate using the plama cutter

.75 round stock
turned down to .63 (outer most part of thread)
8 TPI

not an exact fit but it works, I just don't know how much force these threads will take.

I guess as soon as I can get to a solid works machine I can draft up some and throw them in the Finite Element Program and see what kind of forces. I mean it ultimetly depends on the materials chosen right .

One would hope you don't see any axial loading on them, but if you end up off in a ditch you might.

that would be great! but still wont be able to match the thread EXACT... so slop needs to be included in your calculations... unless your going to try and make it exact.

As exact as exact can be. I might instead of using the plasma is have some fun on the mill. I wish I had a cnc mill. I guess I could take a block of aluminum and start cutting the hoop, or maybe plasma the hoop and mill out a nice base for it. I wounder if I should make some small indentations to install some small bearings so it moves up and down easier?

Shouldn't take very long once I get the pattern for the hoop developed to mill out. I'm going to try and make as tight of a fit as I can. The screw holes are found on the frame I am guessing right?

8tpi shouldn't be that hard, I think our huge lathe goes smaller than that or tighter if need be

I have been looking for a project guess I found one. Now if I could learn how to anodize it would be more fun :P I think a nice blue or dark blue or merlo color would look nicely.

I wounder if I made the actual thread more of a turnbuckle style, that way the hook could actually be taken off if need be? What is the law a grade 8 bolt for suspension parts because at shearing forces you want the bolt not to shatter like a grade 5 bolt? Is that about the right track?

I thought grade 5 would bend and grade 8 would simply break.

Uggg I used to know all of these by heart, I should bust out some books

A grade 5 looks like 80kips and a grade 8 is about 100kips?

I cannot remember about the grade 5 versus 8. I know one bends and one breaks/shatters. I cannot member.

nope its useless when being towed... BTW...if they use it...to winch it up.. a couple tow truck drivers said it will bend it!

ALSO!!!!! if you look at the front bumper the tow spot looks like and after thought... its a welded block on the bumper...!!!its not integrated!!!

Well then. Maybe I will have to do some searching under the frame and see if I can find a better spot!

haa...this thread reminds me of a few months ago. I got pulled over at a random-breath (alcohol) test and they usually inspect the car while they are at it. The guy stood back and stared at the front of my car, missed the fact that my tint makes the car look like a hearse and that the car is a bit low and points out that "that tow hook is dangerous, imagine what that would do to someone if it hit them"...

Man...I'd be more worried about the 1.3 tonnes of car 1 inch behind the tow hook if I was being hit by it!!

"sure thing sir, I'll take it off"..

Apparently I don't start back up till the 3rd. Then I don't have class on the 3rd :P So I have some time to work on it. I was thinking of a hoop. And then a base that went into the hoop.

The base I was thinking about install 2 bearing (one on each side) for a shaft so it can pivot down and up. I guess when I remove the front bumper I will look more at this "welded base" and decide if it needs any addition strengthening.

I was thinking about unioning the base and hoop part together and possibly instally a turnbuckle between them. I need to spend some time in front of the drafting table. But alas, I have no gear with me here in hawaii.

When I get back to the mainland (FTM), I will start working on a design a bit
