I believe according to most state laws or US laws there has to be a red reflector close to or incoporated into the rear tail light. you can also see these type of reflectors in the lexus RX suv's

I do not believe you have to have a red reflector in the lights but One dows have to be visible. The new RX, have them on the rear bumper.

example

So If you have the red reflector, where the 03 has there reverse light then I would think these are fine.

Those are neat, never saw them before. I prefer lights without amber myself (one of the reasons I was happy with the 05s, the other being the change to the reverse lights).

I even removed the amber from my E46 and replaced them with the white turn signal lenses - I just like the red and white on most colors.

So what exactly is the law regarding red being seen from the reflector or break light?

Well maybe this is a dumb question... but what color is your break light with a white colored relector light?

red, i believe the bulbs are the same as the LEDs in the third brake light, white until you hit the brakes. the sell white LED bulbs that turn red when they are activated.

Yep... passed inspection when I registered it in Oregon back in the fall.

Likewise... kudos to you and your mini. Great minds think alike!

I've even been planning to get the M7 splitter you've got mounted on yours! I did consider the bbs wheels, but am opting for a different set. Pics will be posted when they are done...

The turn signals illuminate orange and the brake, third brake, and rear running lights all illuminate red...

EDIT: OK... now I feel dumb...or slow... someone answered the question already...

No reflectors!

I actually ordered Newt with the JCW tails (clear turn signal only) and Classic MINI ordered the entire white tails instead. Newt is Pure Silver and the white tails look awesome. I found out later that Classic should have installed the reflector kit in the bumper but didn't. Thank God they made the mistake as I would never want them to cut my bumper to install the reflectors.

I know I'm running "illegal", but I have not been harrassed by any cops for over a year. If I do, I'll play dumb and tell them Classic made the mistake. I still think the white tails are by far the best choice for any pre-'05 MINI hands down. I have seen many MINI's in Europe and they are very popular there. Cheers!

I emailed your recommendation to MiniMania and got an email back from their Ken Suzuki. He wrote that they verified this by installing the fixture on a 2005 and found the wiring to be the same as on pre-2005s with the exception of the reverse light which then gets wired to the bumper. So the nifty fixture that JeffS has works for a 2005 that does not have the rear fog light option (which, unfortunately in this case, I got in order to have the full array of toggles).

Thanks to rednwhitecooper for the information, to MiniMania for trying it out, and for JeffS for posting the pic.

That's funny that you should name your Mini Newt. There is a Newt here in Phoenix too.

Does your look like this? I designed the graphics on this one.

Do the white tails themselves reflect light? If not, your car is in fact less visible. I'd be extra careful about parking on the side of a dark road at night, and to turn on lights before most other people do.

Very paranoid about being rear-ended. Want brightest rear lights.

I know that the MINI has an excellent small car crash rating, etc. and blah, blah. Tell that to an 18 wheeler. So, I'm very paranoid about being rear-ended. I want the brightest rear lights. I have an 04 MCS and had the brake light fix so that the fog lamp light is employed and now there are two brake lights on each side...so now I want them to be as bright as possible. What lens to you recommend?

thanx for doing some research on the subject to get something proven here. i'm either gonna place an order for some white OEM style lights or buy a set of pre - 05 lights, i hate the 05's, the backup light messes up the look of the car. looks too modern for a MINI!

i'll keep ya updated as i progress with this....
