Rear Fog Saga w/ Early 05 Models

Was perusing Gabe's site and noticed this in the how to section - http://www.motoringfile.com/files/2005_taillights.pdf - am I dumb but is there a part in this retrofit kit that will possibly help us early 05 owners who have an 05 with the rear fog added and have no wiring to accomodate the fog lamp?

The part number for retro fit kit is 63 21 0 309 436. There's got to be a part number out there for only the wiring harness - I just have to feel that this is the piece we need to make our rear fog work.

I believe the retrofit wire harness the only difference

between a early 2005 model, and those with September or October 04 build dates. I have an October 05 build and did not need the retrofit wire harness. just plug the lamp assembly in, snap the lens in, and twist the lamp assy into the back of the lens. (with of course 6 position switch and dealer programming )

Don't mean to hijack your thread - but I wonder if you need the January 05 build dates or later to get the bluetooth switches on the left spoke of the MFSW. I understand there is a switch assy that you can buy that comes with the replacement decorative cover so the two bluetooth buttons are on the steering wheel and not the odd black thing mounted to the center posts. I also assume the green led's are gone, and the steering wheel has orange lights consitant with the interior lighting.

rear fog

dude i added mine in 10 min its literally that easy. i did not want to bother with a switch because i was going to leave it on all the time anyway. but there are 2 wires that are connected to the side lights that are on the wheel well molding.i spliced 2 wires to them and connected the 2 wires to the fog light with some quick disconnect plugs. when i turn my lights on its on when i turn them off they are off. bam done. if you need more info send me a pm

Ok. so my question is....

....where the hell is the part number for that wiring harness - that supposedly doesn't exist - it obviously exists. I paid to get my rear fog installed, the dealer installed it and said they needed to investigate the rear harness further. That was a month ago.

Kcollins,

I have a copy of the dealer retro fit on the fog lamp at home. Will look this weekend, and see if I can get your part number.

The retrofit kit will not work.....it taps into the exisiting wiring harness for the light. There is no way to make it work. You can build your harness with the OEM Plug from the dealer. I have built four already and I am picking up 10 more plugs from the dealer and building more today. These harnesses plug right into the light and connect to the tail light plug.

I just went thru this at the dealer yesterday.

The exisiting kit is only available for the '05s with the wiring harness already present. I had told them that MINIUSA (based on a post I saw on here by HowardPM) had said something about releasing the kit for the early build '05s in June and they said that to date they have nothing on it. Actually they said, add 4 months onto June and that is when they might expect to see the parts available.

I'm just afraid that there are so few of us with the cars that are affected that they'll never release the parts.

Yes I am, please email me at minirolls@msn.com I can provide you all the details. The install is very easy, it requires that you remove the driver's taillight for an easy install.

Here is the word from MINIUSA (as of today) about the OEM retrofit kit for the 7/1/04 - 10/14/04 (w/out wiring) rear-fog light.

Yes in July. The parts are already in the warehouse, only need a new
installation instruction. The bad news, the installation time will be
somewhere between 2-3 hrs. The additional wiring harness needs to be
routed from the A pillar to the rear bumper through the whole car. We
have checked several other options, but this is still the fastest and
most cost effective version.

So whoever said their dealer said $600 installed (a while back) is probably pretty close to what it will end up being.

Just thought I'd let you know for those that want to go the OEM route.

Hello guys:
How could I know if mine has all the wiring.
I bought mine (mcs 05) the 28th of May. (The car had just arrived that morning into the lot)
Does my car needs wiring or can I just install it without having to run all the cables throughout the car?
I just mentioned this to the dealer when I bought the car, and the service people gave me this scary scenario of having to rewire the whole thing.
(This was at UNIVERSAL MINI Los Angeles)
These people at this particular dealership make you feel like every job is an incredible pain in the ***!
Thanks for you help.

I just called Mini ALexander and I believe my car is pre wired...they say it will take 2 to 3 ours of labor. I think I could do this job myself.
Does anyone have any DIY guide for this (images would be sweet!)
thanks again.
PS: Price: 196.00 for light and toggle button.

Build dates for '05s w/out the wiring are 7/1/04 - 10/14/04. Find out your build date, but what you said in this post would lead me to believe you have the wiring. I was quoted 1 hour of labour when they thought my car had the wiring.

Wow guys I don't know but I have a feeling that here in LA the mini dealerships have prices out of proportion. Don't know if you guys are aware that Coopers in this area are as much as 5,000 above MSRP.

krut where did you find those prices?
thank you.

If you buy the toggle panel it comes with detailed install instructions from MINI. The light is a no brainer.....Then you just take it to the dealer for programming. It is not very hard to install the panel.

I bought the rear fog light from Global in Atlanta and when I pulled the black cover off the plug for the light was right there. It was taped to the harness. I untaped it and plugged it into the rear of the light then popped the red light in. The only thing for me is I want the light on when I turn on the switch, even without the lights on. I believe I'll probably end up cuttin the plug off the harness and wire it up independantly and put a momentary-off-on switch so I can flash people who ride my bumper. Any thoughts on wiring it up this way vs factory?? What has everyone else done. BTW my biuld date is 12-04 for a 05 mcs.

How much did you pay for the whole thing? Krut showed a price list that sounds pretty decent compared to my quote.
Also, is that straight forward to install?...just plug and thats it?
