My PIAA 540's are protected with the clear adhesive protector film. I have upgraded the wattage from the stock 55watts to the off-road only 85watt bulbs, so I've got about as much heat being created inside the lamps as would be possible.
Despite the unfounded speculation here, my actual real world experience shows that I've yet to melt the protective film. . . .
Mandaboo, you can get a 12x12 inch piece of headlamp film for $15 here. Assuming that your lights are 6 inches diameter, some careful cutting will get you 4 circles for $15. Not a bad deal at all!

edit: Looks like you ordered the clear covers. . . they will be super cool!

Plus, I had some thing in my lab catch on fire today that really shouldn't have next to the heat source I was using, in a situation similar to my lights and I thought about it too much

Good job, Wagnbat!
I like those clear IPF light covers, and found that they ARE compatible with the lights that are in the Alta kit.
Alta's kit has the 968 light, and these covers fit that!

I might have to order me a set.

Just goes to show that we really should not bash SUV's quite as much as we do around here, since some of the off-road products can cross-over into the MINI world quite nicely!
For instance, I have been considering adding some sort of really nice locking security storage container made by Tuffy. This little "Mini" storage box might just fit under the passenger seat with access only if the seat is moved all the way forward. . . or it could be put in the boot. . . .

For you guys/gals ordering the clear covers, you can paint the inside similar to RC car bodies. That'll keep the cover looking sharp and avoid chips. Unless you want to use the lights w/ the covers on (had to put that note in there in case someone paints thier covers and they burst into flames and want to sue me)
You could always paint in a MINI emblem (bats work too) and it would shine through like the bat signal!

I really like the look of the 4 lights low-down to the ground, but unfortunately, that set-up is illegal here in New Jersey. For some reason, there's a friggin' law (hey, this IS 'Joisey afterall!!! ) that states it's illegal to have more than 4 lights on at any one time on a passenger vehicle. How folks with 4x4's and SUVs get away with it, I don't know. But I modified the wiring of my OEM driving lights so they can be on independantly from my hi-beams, and I got pulled over and given a $50 dollar ticket!!!
Yup - that'll make society safer officer - Good work!! scheeeez....

Key word being highway.
Also, I've got the lights wired up to two circuits, inner and outer, and they only turn on when the hi-beams are on, disabling the fogs. So I can turn one set on, and have my two high beams, and I'm still legal on the highway.
But then again, the light aren't for the highway. They're for non-lit country backroad runs.
