Painted front grille?

I was wondering if anyone had the 4 color matched slats in the front grille painted black to make the car look more sporty. Im thinking about this mod for my all red cooper s. If there are any pics out there, that would be really hepful. Thanks guys. Wish i could stay and talk but its time to go to work

I did the same thing as above...one of the first people to try it as far as i can tell, so i have put it through a lot of testing. The best bet is to actually buy some vinyl in the color you want and cover the grill slats. They will take the abuse much better without chipping, and would allow you to change colors however you want.

My colors are different, I have a liquid yellow MCSc, and I got a spare set of grill slats painted dark silver (I like this much better than black) by my dealer, then installed them myself.

Several thousand miles later (I just rolled 5000) and no worse for wear!

I dont mean to high jack but how did you guys remove the bottom slat???
did you have to take the bumper off?
I want to get a chrome grill but the thoughts of having to remove the bump isnt very appealing.

I did this quite a while ago. Bought a spare grille and had it painted at an auto painters.

Yes, you have to take the bumper off to replace the lower slat, but it's really not that big a deal. I had the bumper off, the slat replaced and the bumper back on in about an hour. The tricky bit is that there is a screw on each side that you can only access from the wheel well. Turn your wheels to full lock before you start.

Hey Doombuggy

Those who are handy with a screwdriver drop the bumper. Others have pryed it off, although some of them damage the slat or chrome in the process.

Sorry I don't have the link here on NAM, but just search the Interior/Exterior Mod Forum by entering "change grill" You'll find volumes on the subject.

What did they charge you to paint it? I've located a spare grille in primer, but the auto shop I contacted said it would be $200 just to paint it!

Yes I have all three. I would say they are semi gloss. Not flat black. These are metal unlike the plastic aero kit. Emblem overlay is something I bought from a guy on ebay. He can make any kind of logo to go over the stock one. I have "mini" (lower case) on blue background.

It was going to cost me $50 for the 2 grilles and the boot handle, but because it took so much longer to get done than it was supposed to (they were supposed to be in for AMVIV) I wound up not having to pay for it.

It's MINI spec Dark Silver - the slats were painted by the shop at South Bay MINI in Torrance, CA (Near Los Angeles). And before anyone asks, they were FREE!

I discovered that you can purchase OEM black slat grills from MINI. I noticed that the MINI One (the low end MINI model sold in Europe) comes standard with a black grill (as well as black boot handle and mirror covers). I asked Classic MINI about availability, and they returned with a quote:
Black bonnet grille p/n 51137116964 MSRP $42.50 Classic $34.00
Black bumper grille trim strip p/n 51117032899 MSRP $16.90 Classic $13.52
Adhesive strip for bumper grille trim p/n 51111490960 MSRP $9.20 Classic $7.36

I'm going to order a set and install it on my 2006 Pepper White MCC, which arrives in October. My car should end up looking very much like this (image from UK configurator):

The black grill looks very nice on the Seven Edition MINI One in Solar Red:
