Production

Did you guys ever find someone who will do the production of these scoops for you? I would expect some vendor would jump all over this, given the incredibly positive response on NAM.

I just saw this in a NAM member's gallery (Lagston)

does anyone know what this is? Is the new scoop similar in shape? The suspense is unbearable

That's hot. Very hot. I like the look of the mounting holes. Is that painted or in it's natural state? I think the contrast to the silver is wonderful.

What's that gauge thingy sticking up between the cowl and windscreen?

It's fresh out of the oven complete with pits and air bubbles Just kdn...it's cast resin painted flat aluminum which looks amazingly like cast metal I chose to drill through the mounting area and threaded blind nut inserts. I like the way it turned out...for a rough prototype

Oh, the gauge? Sharp eyes...it's a pressure gauge for the H20/Methanol injection. I chose to keep it outside as I didn't want 140psi of this mix gettin loose inside the Mini I had a fuel pressure gauge similarly setup on my old Turbo REX

So how did this project start? Did you use the stock piece as start, or did you start with the opening and build out (inward)?

I don't have an S, so this question may be silly: Does the opening on the underside of the hood have to match up to the IC? I assume it does, but is it IC specific - or is the route pretty much the same across the board?

Just curious as to how this all came about, and mostly want something else to read about while we await further updates!

I think I covered the history in this thread somewhere but for your convinience, here is the comprehensive story...

For the Ram Intake Project (RIP), I wanted to achieve three goals over the stock unit:
1-provide additional air flow through IC and improve it's efficiency
2-look like a "factory designed" option for a modified Cooper S
3-no increase in drag...

There are presently 3-4 aftermarket MCS intake designs out there. However, each of them are thematically mispatched to the Mini's lines IMO (no offense to anyone in particular). For racing purposes, aesthetics are irrelevant. But for the rest of us who wanted both a "functional" intake and one that looks like a factory option for the Mini Cooper S, there were no viable alternatives (at least to me).

Although all the current intake alternatives worked as claimed by forcing in more air through the same factory opening with a funneling effect. I wanted to try and physically open up the available intake areaand see if this would better the design. This was achieved through the necessary removal of the OEM plastic diverter. By eliminating this piece, we were able to model the opening to the limitations of the sheet metal allowing an upward dimensional increase of nearly 5/8"...substantially increasing the frontal intake area. This improvement, combined with a carefully sculpted shape that we feel is a natural extension of the original intake's form vocabulary, provided a homogeneous look that's befitting of a "modified" Cooper S.

As to the development of the model, JS supplied all the skills and labor from his vast experience as a automotive sculpter. He is very familiar with form vocabulary and together, we had little difficulty coming to the same conclusion. We started with a damaged intake scoop donated from poor Brandon's Mini that was totaled enroute to MOTD05 (don't worry, he is ok and will be picking up his new 06 MCS soon). From there, JS cut up the parts that needed to "grow" and he applied sculpting clay, raked it to shape, add more clay, mounted to Mini, checked attitude and lines, repeat process until we were both satisfied. We also received some invaluable inputs from another good friend who's in the "business" regarding the finer points of real world aerodynamics and made the final adjustments. JS then made a silicone mold, manually injected experimental resin into mold, wait for cure, pulled it and found the durometer specification was wrong, tried again and now I have the third prototype installed. This material is still not quite correct as it is subject to excessive micro air bubbles...but good enough for testing.

After testing prototype #1 (page 1...last picture is #3), we netted a significant temperature reduction inprovement over OEM intake and decided to start this thread and share our secret project. There appears to be enough prompting for us to produce the RIP. But that's not where our interests lie...other creative distractions get in the way (A.D.D.) However, we are now receiving interests from vendors who have expressed interest in helping this product into mass production...maybe in CF as well. Pray that this works out

Further testing this afternoon has netted a 13F difference between ambient and AIT***. These measurements are from the OBD/Auterra monitoring temps changes through my Alta TMIC. Next week, Jeff at Alta has offered to repair my diverter so I'll be retrofitting back to OEM intercooler and do more measurements

***your results may vary
