Slotted oval thing on headliner?

Just curious, I purchased my Mini 3 weeks ago, and noticed an oval piece on the headliner up from my rearview mirror. What is it? It's slotted and looks to be a microphone. For a hands free kit?

If it is a microphone, can I use it when I install an aftermarket Bluetooth kit? Is it prewired, just not hooked up since I don't have the bluetooth accessory? Thanks.

Yes, its for a hands free mic. I don't think they ever actually developed a mic to go in there. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I put a Motorola hands free kit and mounted the mic in there, but it was too muffled. I even cut the slats but it still sounded terrible. Now my mic is on the visor mount.

Would you mind posting pictures of your setup? What Motorola HF kit did you use? Verizon is suppose to be coming out with their version of the Razr at the end of '05 beginning of '06. If you could post pictures or send some to my e-mail address, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

I'm thinking about relocating a few things, but here are a few pics.

The mic on the visor (temporarily secured w/ double sided tape)

Here's the cradle (ignore the dirt )

The main unit is under the driver's seat and the speaker is in the passenger foot well mounted to the center stack.

I believe that the slotted piece there is a built in microphone - the car is prewired to accept OEM handsfree phone kits (if its anything like BMWs I've had).

Is there any way to hook it up to an aftermarket Bluetooth kit?

YES. Your looking at a Mot IHF1000 BT (MOTs top of the line BT). Main control is the doohicky on the dash. Mic is hidden in the little thingie where its "prewired" for MINI BT above the mirror. Speaker is on floor hidden under passenger downtube, you cant see it.

Its used everyday with a Razor. Wife thinks its the BEST mod of the car.
