? about replacing mirror caps.

In reading all the threads and FAQ's for removing / replacing mirror caps, one question I have that has not been answered..... I purchased a used set of chrome mirror caps and some of the clips on both caps are missing the little piece of plastic that goes between the "ears " of the clips. Will these caps still be able to be used, and still properly hold the covers on? I'm hesitant to remove my old covers, as I don't want to damage them and not be able to use the the chrome covers. Any insight would be great before I try what seems to be a simple install.

You should be able to use the chrome caps provided you add a little adhesive to the locations where the clips are broken. I replaced my white caps with chrome and, although the clips did not break, I found that the caps fit too loosely and wrattled when the doors were shut. So I removed the caps and placed a little black (color not important) silicone rubber (aka "RTV") at each clip location, then reinstalled the cap. That was enough to just snug up the caps, and I should still be able to remove them in the future by just breaking the RTV "seal". Just make sure you don't overdo it and allow the RTV to ooze out from under the cap.

fwiw,

Steve

From your discription, I'm thinking you did the install by removing the mirror glass method? Is that correct?
