Smoking Tail Lights= illegal?

I have done many searches and looked online to see if smoking my tail lights out is illegal in california. I would guess it is, because basically any sort of mod done to your car is illegal, but I want to know what sort of fines there are for it and such.

Sooo.. anybody know if it is illegal in california?

There are guidelines..... you can get a light smoke where the reflectors and lights are in tact & function.

When you go too dark... it's a safety issue:
1. Reflectors don't work
2. Lights are too dim

Quick examples from www.lamin-x.com
"Smoke" (lighter tint)

Charcoal (darker tint)

i'm in cali... it's illegal.
1. you're chances/reasons for getting pulled over are higher now.
2. all shops can do this and all say, "at your own risk"
3. if/when you get pulled over it will be a fixit ticket. (i.e.-fixit, take it to the sheriff/local authority inspection station, pay the $10 processing fee, buy some more sticky stuff and put it back on... if you want to)

i personally have an all black mcs, smoked every single lens on the car, blacked out the headlight trim rings, swapped out the side markers to the smoked ones, just tinted 65% today... i get looks from the cops all the time. just smile, say hi and be merry. at least it's a MINI and not a ricer p.o.s. up to no good.

Yup, illegal...deal with it. I have my car tinted illegally in three ways lol. Windows are 20%, legal limit is 50%. Tail light tint is dark, and isn't legal. And I also painted my side repeater lights black, to the point where you can't see the orange light through them. I also tinted my reflector lights, but those are light enough to still kind of be seen...not sure if that's illegal or not. Oh, and I also don't run a front plate, which is also illegal.

How many times have I been pulled over - 0.

One word folks

Badass.

Joking Cody. But, I run no front plate, illegal, never been hastled about it. If they pull you over, say your ordering the kit where you dont drill holes, because its a new bumper.

I will smoke out tails, and black out belt line soon enough.

I was pulled over for speeding (Imagine That ) a few weeks back and the Cop asked me if they we're OEM and I said yes! Then he said those are hawt, but are probably illegal. Still gave me a speeding ticket, but not one for my tail lights

I went with the charcoal from lamin-x. Haven't been pulled over and live in a town where they look to go out of the way to ticket people.

My old Firebird came with "black out" tail lights from the factory. They were jet black unless a bulb was 'on'.
