Removal of center console/E-brake cover

Can anyone give me tips on the proper removal of the center column (where the shifter shaft is as well as just aft of there, where the little tray thingie lives) and e-brake cover on a '06 MCS with a OEM arm rest? I need to get under there to run some wires, and I don't want to damage the e-brake cover... Pulling up on it gently began to stretch the material, exposing holes that look like thread through retaining clips of some sort, and I didn't want to rip anything.
