What good is the lower lip?

I have an Aero kit and it looks to be very low in front and as I'm going to run the car during winter I was thinking of cutting the lower lip off. What good is it?

Are you talking about the vertical lip that hangs about 1" below the bumper?

^^ lol...

i think it's there to let you know your chassis is about to hit ground and
to becareful next time not to take the bump, hump, dip so damn fast.

but in your case, your oil pan does that for you.

Low and slow....down and out euro

skid plate goes on soon, and driving over bumps is done with care. It would have scraped off by itself anyways being that low

But what does it really do? I doubt its for high speed downforce , I'm guessing its a under body wind deflector to reduce under cabin buffeting and noise. Or to help air flow through the engine compartment, by underbody suction.

hahah you do realize that even if it was a 'wind deflector' it would act as a downforce too right?

If it did give downforce,(how is a mystery) it would be only at very high speeds ,useless on the street, but many cars have this lip, family sedans and the like and its another mystery as to why.

The lip looks good, don't know about the thing hanging down.

But the thing hanging down could give u a decent amount of downforce depending on your setup (traction on highways for family sedans maybe). It mostly prevents air from going under the car, creating low pressure=suction. Similar to a wing on the back of the car but not exactly, the lip thing is using the whole car. (Wing works as air flowing under it is going faster than air going over, creating a low pressure under thus pushing it down. No/less air going under the car=lower pressure). I think.

Also probably protects anything behind it (which is ).

Check sig for the thing hanging down on the aero kit.

The piece is called an air dam, a Google search came up with this definition in various forms “An air dam is a projection of the body shell underneath the front of the chassis. Its function is to reduce the amount of air turbulence and drag underneath the car and to channel air to the radiator”.

So by blocking air passage under the vehicle it encourages air passage through the radiator because fluids chose the path of least resistance. I think you already understand what down force is all about, you don’t have to see very many NASCAR races to realize that when the vehicle is turned backwards, down force measures become ineffective and the vehicle is likely to become air borne. Our vehicles don’t see those velocities on the street but the principle is still in affect albeit reduced.

In the MINI design the air dam also encourages heat from the engine bay to exit from below, through the channel formed for the exhaust header. The cowl vents have a different function than for legacy vehicles.

I wonder about this new fascination with hood louvers and how it will ultimately affect aerodynamics. I also wonder about this picture where the middle is void of the dam

how could that be a mystery? It's pretty straight forward dude. Ever seen a diffuser? They both create downforce by not allowing air under the car, thus leaving a negative pocket under the car creating downforce. It could be seen at speeds of probably around 50-60mph aka highway speeds.......check out some of the reading online about aerodynamics

A very interesting point! What do you think was BMW's original approach to handling the air entering the engine bay?
