Decisions: whalen vs. euro tray

Hey everyone,

So my money situation at the moment will allow myself one early christmas gift . I of course want to get myself something for my beloved SB/MC. Well I was very interested in a euro parcel tray that goes underneath the steering wheel so I have have some more space to put little things. However, I was also looking into a whalen shift machine but have never used one.

For those people who have either or both mods, which one could you not live without? They are both about the same price ...

Thanks!

Wow I guess I have been out of the MINI scene longer than I thought. Parcel shelves are out ... and I just knew I remembered them being cheaper way back when ... hmm.. Well can you guys suggest anything else if not the whalen?

My car came with a euro tray, and doubt I`ll ever use it. Something about setting things above the pedals where the can potentially fall off and get jammed turns me off. Plus being so far under the steering wheel, you cant see anything under there, so whats the point?

i have the tray. i dont use it (dont put stuff in), but it looks nice so i recommend it.

if you're looking for a polished ball **** there are several manuf that
have them...including minimania for a smaller price. you might be able
to get both?

It sure makes a great place to stash items you don't want seen when the car is parked. I'd bet someone could break in and still not ever find anything on the shelf.

But go ahead and get the Whalen ****. I've never once heard someone regret it. I'm a royal cheapskate who couldn't imagine spending that much money on a silly shift ****, but once I drove a MINI with one, I HAD TO HAVE IT.

Well, parcel shelves can still be had, but at a much higher price now that MINIUSA has removed them from sale here in the USA. I have both a Whalen & the shelf. I consider them both to be essential mods. Doug Whalen does some fabulous custom work and the **** noticeably improves the shifting, IMHO.

Go with the Whalen. Doug makes unique works of art that you can see and use everyday.

If you have enough money get both, but I do agree with the comments that stuff can fall off the shelf.

Cheers.

I think the cautions about the parcel tray are somewhat overblown. I have a power port and aux input installed into mine. It holds a few of my key items very well. I've yet to have anything come crashing out of it during much "spirited" driving. It's certainly not made for everything and CAN have items come out, though. Much recommended like the Whalen.

I have both. I love them both. I consider both of them "must have" mods.

That said, if I HAD to do without one, it would be the Whalen. I keep my sunglasses and iPod on the parcel shelf, and I also like the extra leg room it gives me. Those things make it the must not do without mod for me.

The Whalen Shift Machine is hands down the single best mod I have done to my MINI. The weight and balance of the **** is absolutely perfect and it makes shifting an absolute pleasure. I have a Euro shelf and forgot about it ten minutes after I installed it. I don't put stuff on it because I'm afraid of what happened to a friend of mine. Her cell phone fell onto the floorboard during a long drive. When she got off the freeway and went to push down on the brake pedal, guess where the cell phone was? It was wedged between the floor and brake pedal. She rear ended a truck that was stopped at the off-ramp and got pretty jacked. I have always put things in a more secure & contained spot after that.

you guys are still discussing this?

just get the damn tray and the ball **** from minimania!
it's weighted looks like a ball and you can get both for the price of
one whalen.

he's on a budget right? i wasnt on a budget when i ordered my whalen,
but i ended up with a weighted MOMO **** and very happy with it.
ofcourse i dont care to have pretty engravings on mine but if that's one
of the features you'd like you should get the whalen.

i spent the rest of the $75 or watever left and used it to get new
outmotoring shift and e-brake boots to make it look real nice.

If you get the Euro tray with the rubber insert, nothing is going to fall off (unless you put something round on it that can roll off) -- I keep my sunglasses and cell phone on there all the time, and they don't move at all. The surface is very grippy, and the extra storage space is very nice.

I originally had a Momo ****. It had a universal fit and was not made as well as the Whalen. I had trouble giving the Momo **** away. The Whalen **** is my single favorite mod. There is not one part of your Mini that is made as well as the Whalen shift machine.

The parcel shelf is going away, the Whalen isn't. Get a shift **** next Christmas. I've had the parcel shelf for a couple of years now and have yet to have anything fall off under my pedals. I keep SCMC and AMVIV cards, my change box and a few other bits and pieces on there. On road trips, I usually throw my wallet, money-clip and phone in there too, so I'm not sitting on them for hours at a time. Wonderful mod. Accessible and secure, yet hard to see from outside the car.
