Interior/Exterior Reducing Engine Bay Dirt / Sealing Wheelwell Gaps
#1
It seems there are a couple of places where water/sand/dirt/salt which is thrown off the front tires while driving can make their way into the engine bay. This is very noticeable here in Minnesota where they use a lot of salt on the roads in the wintertime. It dries white. I have opened the bonnet and seem "trails" where saltwater from the road has entered the engine compartment near the top of the wheelwell and trickled down the front surface of the engine bay side of the black wheelwell housing. There are other spots just inside the bumper as well. I'm guessing that the plastic wheelwell liners are not one piece, and road spray penetrates gaps between its pieces. Which leads to my question: Have any of you folks tried any method of sealing these seams/gaps? I'm considering trying to get in there with silicone caulk as a sealer, or perhaps some kind of adhesive tape. It would be easier to coat the inside of the wheelwell with aeresol rubberized undercoating, but I don't want to do that to my car, besides, the wheelwell liners have to stay removable for certain maintenence procedures and I wouldn't want to bury the fasteners under the undercoating. Any thoughts?
