Finally - Custom Gauge Faces

I finally found a place that's doing custom Speedo and Tach faces. They're doing colors, checkers and Union Jack. I actually know a guy at the company in Phila so I got one of the first ones. They're called Cockpit Specialties and that's their website. I think they're selling through ebay for now.

Those are pretty cool, I'm excited to see what their vintage "Smith" design will look like.

Outmotoring.com is working on a set as well, I know. Not sure of the ETA though...

Oh man, now I HAVE to get one of thse to match the Smith gauges on the Europa . At least the MINI doesn't have an ammeter that would need the "Lucas" logo .

They are direct replacements so the price actually isn't bad.

I wonder how tough it is to actually replace the face. Would these just lay on top of the original ones or be a full replacement?

I'd like to see faces that match the dash finish. Anthracite would be interesting for me to see, or a Dark Silver to match the exterior.

To get to the faces, you'll need to dissassemble the dash, remove the entire gauge, open it, remove the needles and then replace the face. the only part of this that actually scares me is pulling off the needles - I hear they're delicate and need to be re-assambled properly, or else they won't be properly calibrated...

I'm tempted by the checkerboards, but my silver-faced guages are a perfect match in the checkmate interior.

I worry about visibility with that busy background... Gauges are designed to be readily and easily readable with just a glance... I can barely see the numbers on the gauges above (but they might be more legible in person - hope so).

I'd like black or a very dark gray (with white numerals) and a bare hint of sparlke, personally...

I know... I saw them in the other thread announcing these. I was just commenting on the Union jack and checkered ones.

I think plain black would be a tad too severe for me, though...

Its actually not that bad. The dash comes apart quick, and so does the Speedo surround. At first I had a lot of trouble taking the needles off the gauges. But its really not bad at all, use a flat head and easy does it. And yes, careful with alignment, cause if not they won't be calibrated... Probably an hour - hour and a half job from start to finish.

These seem to be complete replacements, which means out with the old, in with the new...

Wouldn't you know it?

... Nothing for Chrono Pack cars! I really want white-on-black instruments.

That's what I'm hoping for on the old school "Smiths" style.

From my Europa...
