Wow, Misfitoy your's look amazing, especially with the original chrome headlight rings. I would love to do this to my car, but I'm scurrrrred to depleat my mod funds on a screw up.
While the oven is warming...take a couple of shots...it worked for me...
You'll find two empy bottles of Cabo Wabo, me passed out face first, and old bright eyes staring at me with stupid smile on it's face. Actually that sounds like a good time, maybe I'll give it a shot.
Is there anywhere that has a detailed how to process? i feel that if i have some guidance or instruction from someone that has done it i will feel safer and more confident about doing it myself.
For those who have done the ol joey on projectors, does the gatlin bezel come off by just pulling? is it clipped on?
Just dont want to break it.
BTW, i did this on my 03 xenons, and it took 1 hour per light because the adhesive DOES NOT MELT!!! I would not try this on a set of 02-04 lights unless you're sure that you have the newer glue that is soft when not even hot.
I just did the mod on my 05 xenons, and I got them apart in 2 minutes FLAT. No kidding, I could have gotten them apart w/out even using the oven.. Like butter I tell you..
Jahmills,
go for it -- that would look great on your car, with the darker stripes
Hey I remember this thread, well I did end up going through with it right before Christmas, and since I first heard about this mod from Melissa a couple of years ago, I'll add my pics to her thread.
I've dont 4 sets, and ony had to use the oven for one set.
You better get hopin on two more sets plus tailights THIS WEEKEND!! or no mushu fo you! I put my grill on....now we need to finish the car up! PLus, Im gonna paint the door handles too!!!
i am in the midle of this process right now. i have one in the oven baking at 220. the lense tuned white in a spot and turned ruff. I hope it can be polished out. it was over 8" away from the heating element so i don't know if it was just a defect in the plstic or what. I will try to get it cleared back up. I am also doing a rerofit also.
That is gloss black paint for plastic on Mighty ^ no issues with heat but they'll be back in the oven for the same low gloss black as the scoop and mirror caps.
The headlight rings will be the same black vinyl as the stripes at the same time.
Almost forgot if any motorers in the Chicago area want to do this but are worried about it. PM me did the Golf two Minis and a WRX with no broken lights yet. Warmer weather is better for painting but anything over 15 is fine thanks to the heater in the garage.

There are 2 types of headlights. The newer ones are SIMPLE to take apart, and barely need more than 2-3 minutes in the oven at 100-200 degrees. I just turned my house furnace up to 70, and that seemed to do the trick. The older ones have this hellish rubber cement compound that is hard as a rock. Pain in the ***, and I will never attempt another set. Having done both types, I must say that the newer type headlights are a walk in the park, and can be done by anyone on their lunch break.
Sorry to hear you melted your lenses. I melted my housing trying to get the cement to soften. I have an extra set of lenses in near mint condition that I could sell for cheap is you need them.
i heated and pried mine open numerous times on both of the minis ive had ....i did a write up i renamed the eddie mod a while back feel free to tak a look ...ive found that this mod was very overrated on the fear factor ...its A LOT easier than i initially thought it would be

Like I said, depends on which lights you have. It seems the pre-facelift lights use some rubber cement that DOES NOT get soft no-matter the temp or time in the oven... pain in the *** *(an hour per light). I later took apart some '05 xenons, and got them apart in literally 2 minutes.
i got mine apart and found out the projectors i have would not fit properly without major hacking and the lense is definitly effed. I am putting it back on the car and just ordering a newer set of lights off ebay and doing it to them most likely.
I already did yours with you. You want them body color next or are you going to have Cooper Gear do them to match the dash and doors?
The older style sound like they have the same stuff that was in my golf which took an x-acto knife to cut through and some silicone to reseal. That was a PITA
Mel did mine, and they turned out great! Much happier than just sending off the headlight rings to get blacked out, but get ready to get your hands dirty...
