Here's a how too. The "joey mod" was started years ago by a guy named joey on vwvortex. It was named the "joey mod" after the guy since soooo meny people loved it. its actually knowas the "joey mod" all over the internet.

Here's a tip if you dont have a heat gun, U can take your head lights apart inthe oven at 230 degrees, much eaier. make sure u take out all your light bulbs

If I had Xenons I do this in a heart beat, but I can't figure out if it'd look good witht he 05 Halogens.

BTW there is a nother thread on here that centers around this mod they gave cerdit for starting to the subies, I suggest you go set them right

i want to do this but i am so scared of pulling my expensive Xenons apart and not getting them back together right. i want to do it all black on my hyper blue MINI except for the 2 "rings" and the projector housing.

Mel,
I was going to ask if you did it in the oven/heat gun when someone else on MU did it with a dremel to cut the glue...

They look absolutely amazing... good job!

Thanks every one!!

I actually did two sets of headlights this weekend. I helped with my friend’s regular lights. I have to say my Xenons where easier to pull apart. I pulled them apart with no heat and not having to put them in the over.

The other headlights had to go in the oven and came a part slowly.

The first hard thing for both lights is popping the head light rings off. ya got to do it slow and easy or you will break the little tabs off. (But if they brake, just use double sided tape when you put them back on)

Just take your time pulling the lens off the head light housing. I used 3 flat head screwdrivers and slowly worked my way around to pull the lens off.

Once the lens is off you just pull the inside rings out and becarefull not to brake the little clips inside also.

Just take your time when taking it apart and every thing should be ok.

Sand parts with smooth grit, tape off what you don’t want painted, and primer and paint. I did bake the headlights to help dry the paint after for about 30 mins. Since the head lights where hot, all the parts slipped back together and I was able to re-seal the lights very tightly.

This mod isn’t that hard to-do, its just intimidating

Nicely done. I've seen it on a few cars and wondered about the procedure. Thanks for the explanation.

Looks incredible. I don't think it would work so well with the chrome rings around mine though.

Well done Mel. Looks great. I think that would look great on my car, but how does it affect the light output, and what about extra heat retention?

Rally said it best on another thread on MU,

her headlights are xenons and hence, projectors. She didnt paint any of the projector so 0% of light would be lost. The same goes for halogens as long as you dont paint the reflector piece (which is a separate part). The chrome on the interior of our headlights has no function
OOO and since the head light do get hot, I used Heat/engine paint. Since that can hold up to high heat

But the clear lens passes more light than the tinted one. When you tint your car windows, it's darker inside the car even when the sun is throwing the same amount of light. I agree that the output of the bulb/projector isn't lessened, but the light thrown on the road has to be.
