<thinking out loud>
I'm envisioning an adapter that would fit the A/T shift arm and would allow the attachment of the Whalen M/T ****. The bottom of the adapter would fit over the A/T shift arm, the top would be like the M/T arm, and in the middle would be a release mechanism to move the op-rod on the A/T. Sort of like the reverse lock-out on hot rod/ drag racing shifters.
Would require the machining of 2 pieces (adapter and release lever) and some means of attaching the release to the op-rod.
Sure wish I had some drawing skillz, so I could show what this would look like, but you (maybe) get the general idea.
What you would end up with is a Whalen **** with a lever underneath that would be actuated by pulling up with 2 fingers. The major difference in the car would be the shift **** sitting a couple of inches higher than normal.
I'll have to try drawing this up and see what Doug thinks. Whether it is worth the time in setup/tooling would be something Doug would have to decide.
What say you?

No need for an adaptor ladies and gents! You can put it on without any funny modifications! But, you have to be sure to tell Doug that you are ording for a CVT, because our shifters lock in 90deg. off from the manuals shifters. So if you don't tell him, your design will be sideways. But, yahoo!!! I'm going to go motoring tomorrow on some twisties, so full report of open motoring to come tomorrow.

Edit 1:
Just got home from a nice motoring session in pure manual mode. The shifter stuck very nicly. While at a light I decided to give it a twist to see what would happen, with a bit of force the ball can rotate, it seems that the lock bar is a bit too high up to catch our shift lever. So at the next light I popped it off and tried to put it on with the perpendicular to the opening, it went on, and locked, still with force it could turn. So it in fact dosn't matter which way the design faces. The feel was much more sturdy as I bumped the shifter in the twisties to make my gear changes. Overall impressions after 24 hours, LOVE IT!

Sorry for the bad images, but the camera sucks . It is actually on my CVT, I swapped out the boot from a manual, so now my center console looks like a complete manual

Put me on the interested list for an adapter to take the standard Whalen **** and make it work on the MCSa shifter. I've got a way cool customized **** that is sitting in the drawer since I sold my manual '02 and got a Auto MCS '05.

Have you attempted to put it on your 05' MCSa? Assuming both of the automatic sticks are the same, like the two manual sticks are the same...it should fit and stick.

Here it is, folks... custom Whalen Shift **** in a MC with automatic CVT...

Might be a little hard to see the emblem on top of that shift **** but it has the MINI Wings on checkered background.

Yep, great job, Jeremy !!

That's right, Rally, no button to depress to switch from P to R to N to D to Sport Mode. Of course, that means you have to exercise a little care when driving so as not to accidently knock the stick from D into N and then up to R because that would be verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry bad on the tranny.

Maybe I'll just have to leave it in Sport Mode... impossible to knock it into reverse from that spot in the shift pattern.

I don't know about MINIs but in MOST cars if you slam it into reverse while moving forward it will kill the engine before it will kill the trans.

I hope that's the case but I don't want to be the one to test that theory.

Shift ****

I drilled out this cue ball and used my sons Boot from a RX8 and put it over the Mini boot and selector lights. I was told by the dealer the lights must remain in the circut. When the car went in for service the mechanic laughed when he couldnt find the clutch.

Okay, I'm about to order one of these babies (engraved) from Doug...are we SURE there's nothing special that needs to be done, other than the 90-degree rotation? I told him it's for a CVT and he is non-plussed but I, being the worrywart, want to make sure it's correct!

Sweet, that is really cool.

I'm going to go out on a limb here Paul...but your shifter **** looks like mine, right (do you have a pic?)...if so, I bet it works the same.

Or, maybe yank it off, take a picture, and let Jeremy see if it looks like his...

I've had mine in for about 3 weeks now, and I have to say, LOVE IT! I havn't kicked out of D into N or R at all yet, I do 'shift' for myself quite often (probably 80% of my time motoring) so I say, what are you all waiting for .
