JCW GarageInterested in John Cooper Works (JCW) parts for your 2nd Generation MINI? This is where JCW upgrades and accessories for the MINI Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S (R56), and Cabrio (R57) MINIs are discussed.
My 09 Auto should be here late Nov. and want to get the Works package. Ive been looking for before and after dynos but cant find any. Does anyone here have them and can you post em up? Thanks.
I'm looking into getting it. It may seem kind of late to get it now for an 07, but I have only 38k miles on it and would rather not have a car payment for a couple more years. Between the kit and powdercoating the wheels black, it will look and feel like a new car.
I asked this same question in another thread and the answer was yes. I'm looking around the Chicago area to find one with the kit so I can listen to it and compare to the factory jcw.
Just scheduled with my SA to have the New JCW Tune Kit for R58 added next week. I have a little over 2K miles on standard S setup, will report back when its all done.
No. At least not on the US version of the JCW tuning kit, there is maybe a little more burble, but NO POP. It is nothing like the pop and burble on the stock 2012 MCS models. I just had the kit installed on my 2007 a few weeks ago.

I didn't drive my 2012 MCS without the JCW kit; I don't have experience with pop/burble "unkitted".
*With* the kit: Sport mode off: no pop/burble at all. Sport mode on: lotsa burble, lotsa pops. Boisterously so, in fact!
So it strikes me they have varying sets of tune for the kit, depending on year, perhaps? I know that my delivery was held up a couple of days while they waited for new software from "corporate".

No. The popping on your car has nothing to do with the JCW kit. A bone stock 2012 MCS will pop. I had a 2012 MCS autotragic Clubman as a loaner while the JCW kit was being installed a few days ago, and it POPPED. Earlier model cars do not pop, at least US cars, with or without the JCW tuning kit.

Interesting, is it the case with non-kitted MCS cars that they burble/pop only in sport mode? On mine, *with* the JCW kit installed, I can turn OFF the burble/pop when sport mode is off, and turn it ON when sport mode is on. Did your loaner Clubbie behave this way?

Yes, just like you describe, the 2012 MCS autotragic Clubman loaner I was given only seemed to pop in sport mode.

I had the same problem. "Waiting for new software" is the polite way of saying that the JCW tuning kit wasn't compatible with stock 2012 MCS models without having engineers do custom programming. I had the first 2012 at my dealership and it took them 7 days to correct it. No problems since.
I never drove my car without the kit, but I know it doesn't P&B unless you are in sport mode. Easy fix, though! :D
Also, Aklucsarits if you could refrain from insulting people with your "autotragic" comments it would be great. Not only is it definitively incorrect as it pertains to MINIs, it comes across as juvenile and uninformed. Thanks in advance!
I don't think he meant to insult. I've also called them autotragic my whole life. That's just the way it is. Tragic that a car like a MINI can be driven by one foot. Better than "slush box"
anyone in the charlotte area have a stage 1 i can try? =]
I have a stage II in the Charlotte area. It is half the horsepower of my Corvette but the Mini JCW is a blast to drive. The closest thing I can put it to was my Cobalt SS I used to have. Same horsepower and stuck to the road like glue. I can't wait to take it to the mountains next weekend.

I know of the factory JCW and the MCS with JCW Tuning Kit (called a stage 1) but what is a "stage II"? Is that just another name for the factory JCW or something else?

Pretty sure stage II = factory JCW. I have the stage I kit on my '13 Clubman and love it. I had it pre-installed before I took ownership of it though, so I don't have any experience with it prior to the mod. It's a bit more vocal than the stock S, but not by a whole ton from what I can recall. Acceleration seems slightly better than what my MKV GTI was with stock software and a downpipe, but not as good as it was with a stage II tune and upgraded fuel pump added on top of it (generally around 220-225whp or so). The short gears make it a bit harder to directly compare though.
In MINI nomenclature, there is technically no such thing as "stage 1" or "stage 2". They are just unofficial names that hobbyists use for the Tuning Kit and Factory JCW respectively.

[FONT=Tms Rmn]I had just not heard of Stage II before and I've been around for quite a while having bought my first MINI Cooper in 2003. JCW Stage 1, I get. I happen to think factory JCW is to the point whereas "Stage II JCW" just confuses things.

My mistake. I belong to the cobalt ss forum and we have 3 different stage kits. From reading some of the other threads in this forum, it made sense a stage two would be the next higher stage. I didn't intend to make up my own nomenclature or insult anyone. You have to admit if you own a factory JCW it does sound cool calling it a stage two.

I've seen the factory JCW referred to as "Stage II" in quite a few places. When I saw it here (http://www.motoringfile.com/2008/11/...i-vs-stage-ii/) I figured it was more common. Really though, no need to get worked up about making up nomenclature .
