So, is the pop and gurgle there or not?

Hi folks,

I'm trying to get to the bottom of this question. In reviews I have read of the 2013 CM JCW, many of them mention that in sport mode there are plenty of pops on decel. I saw a you tube video of a dealer who had gotten their first CM JCW in. They cranked it up and revved it in both standard and sport mode, and in sport mode, sure enough, there it was: popping like a popcorn popper.

Then I read posts on a site where folks said the popping was gone on the 2013's, that it was a problem that the factory was originally going to fix via a flash to the ECU, then decided it was no a priority and would not address it.

So, can any of you 2013 JCW owners give me the scoop?

thanks

Jeff

I have a JCW from last genuary and I can confirm you that "she" pops on decel. Expecially when you keep the accelerator for maybe one second on a position and than you realease it.
Ok it doesn't sound like a ferrari but it's good enough.
I can also tell you that from inside the cockpit you won't notice it so well unless you open the side windows.
All my friends following for some drives around, told me that the exahust sounds like a rally car and I didn't believe them since I asked someone to try my car standing out and listening to it.
Hope it helps.
Hi from Italy!!!

It's strange you have none.
Maybe there's something wrong that needs to be checked.
Believe me, my CM JCW gen 2013 does.
Probably not like the other JCW but for me it sounds good.

This is defiantly a post that Theta should chime in on. I believe that he has a post somewhere that talks about this in the 2013 JCW CM.

Hi LSE,

Here you go....it's obvious when he switches into sport mode, at about :20 in....THAT"s the sound I am expecting from this car when we finally get it....

Have you had your windows down while in sport mode? Folks have said that with the windows closed, you don't notice it in the cabin, only if the windows are down, or you are riding behind in another vehicle....also, my understanding is that you will only get this after the motor is warmed up.

I don't understand why some appear to and some don't....does not make sense....

And as someone mentioned, I do believe it was Theta that had this same issue and took it all the way up the chain within Mini....

If some do and some don't, that is clearly what appears to be an ECU load issue to me, so not sure why that could not be rectified pretty easily. If it was a situation where they suddenly decided to tune that out for ALL 2013 CMJCW's, that would be a different story. Virtually all the reviews I have read online on the 2013 CMJCW specifically call out the popping on decel in sport mode....

I can confirm with Mini-LSE that the JCW CM does not really pop or burble. Mine doesn't do it with the windows down. When I take my car in for service, I will ask them about it and see what they say. It's pretty annoying that they didn't make the JCW CM with the same specs as the other JCW cars.

I also noticed that even with the sports button on, it's not that much more noticeable in acceleration as my old R56. In my R56, you can feel the power difference when you press the sport button.

Maybe it's just an issue with the sport botton.

You should also feel some differences changing gears (i mean with automatic). In sport it really pushes the gears from one to the other.

Can this be the case? I am thinking the pop and burble only happens in the Manuel version of the jcw CM?

Just a thought

Maybe it's because it's a split exhaust and not twin tipped?

I have a manual JCW CM. Even when I let off the gas at around 5000-5500 RPM's, it doesn't pop or burble with the sport button on or off. My JCW does not sound anything like the one in the video. If I have time, I will make a video of what it really sounds.

One more thing is the exhaust doesn't have the nice sound like the other JCW models either. Trust me, my car is broken in properly. I followed the break-in recommendations from the manual and I have about 3300 miles on the car now. Quite disappointing, but don't get me wrong, I still love the car.

We test drove a '13 Countryman S All4 auto. In sport mode, it was crazy popping. We expected that awesomeness when we picked up our '12 Countryman S All4 last month. Not as much but I get a little love in sport mode when letting off the gas on occasion. The gurgling is more throaty on the '12 than on the '13. Chances are it's the same parts and same everything, it just sounds/feels different between the two. Sorry for interrupting the JCW discussion.

What I noticed this morning (keeping windows opem) It's that somethimes I can hear a quite vibration coming from outside and avoiding the popping to be produced (releasing the accelerator).
Maybe it's a kind of valve that doesn't open correctly. After a while in sport mode everything was ok and I could also hear some nice crackling.
I'll keep trying to check if everything is ok.
Anyway, the JCW has to produce the same sound from the up posted video. Mine does the same.

I did try and I can confirm that sometimes instead of the pops there's a short vibration, most likely when the CM is not warm enough.

I have a '13 CM JCW Manual. It was ordered in late March, built in April and delivered at the end of May.

There's no pop/crackle. I took it back to the dealer. They expected it to be there. Drove it, nothing. Drove two others on the lot. Nothing.

They then concluded it 'must have been engineered out' because none of them are doing it now. They said it's the engine tune that does it, not the exhaust itself.

The video that has been posted is of a European spec car. They have 218bhp. We get a different, 'hot weather' tune in the US - 208bhp. It might be related to that.

It might also be that they tuned it out 'to better appeal to Americans'. My dealer said they would get some cars back from people thinking they were backfiring. Fools. Wouldn't be the first time a manufacturer had dumbed down a Euro product to appeal to the American masses.

So, I've written to MINI. I'm not happy. Will post if I hear back.

Hi from Italy!!!
Your car is European spec with 218bhp. America gets a different 208bhp spec engine. There's no pop on US models.

This post is in the 'Countryman' section. You have a JCW Hardtop. Awesome that it pops, but Countryman JCW's don't...!
