Coolant smell from time to time while driving.......
This happened the first time a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was a car I was following on the freeway. It happened again today. I am suspicious. This smell is coming in the cabin.
Is there any issues with the cooling system on the N18 engine at 16K?

Hello Dube53,
The N18 has not had the thermostat housing leaks at that low mileage on the N18 , but it does happen. Have you looked at the thermostat housing under the side of the engine ? On the transmission? Is you fan running allot in cooler weather , after each shut down ?

+1 thats the thermostat housing ( 11537647305 > 11538671513 now newest part number updated part ) and the bleeder screw , its tucked down in on the top of the engine and sometimes hard to see right beside the engine wire harness. Also the sensor moved a bit.
Here is a shot of the N18 engine on the side with the older design N18 thermostat, the bleeder is in the same location just shorter now. Its in between the vacuum pump and the HPFP, if you have the newer N18 3/2012+ HPFP it will be the smaller looking HPFP. Check right below this for leaks, is so contact your dealer asap.

I just did the same thing, I noticed my heater wasn't working and figured the coolant just needed to be burped. Then I was riding on the highway to work one day and my car was overheating, so I pulled over, checked the thermostat, nothing in it, but I just had an oil changed the day prior and they supposedly checked all of that. So I poured more water into the coolant, drove to the dealer and the water was gone again, but not puddles anywhere. I went home, got on here and seen where a lot of people were having the same issues, the thermostat housing was leaking but it would leak onto the top of the transmission and evaporate their. So I finally noticed that, ordered a new thermostat housing from ebay for $40, and everything is good as new. The Temp sensor it came with wasn't OEM stuff and was having issues with the computer, but I swapped the sensor out from my old one, good as new!
