Description:

FS: 2007 R52 John Cooper Works (JCW) Aero Convertible (Low Mileage, EC) RARE. 59876 miles. Manual Transmission. Needs nothing, Truly excellent condition. Adult owned. Clean carfax.

This is a special Mini - the low mileage, last of the supercharged, well maintained JCW Mini you've been looking for. It has the full Aero body kit which is very rare to find in perfect condition. Motor is very strong, does not burn oil, start/runs perfect cold or hot.. no leaks, no cold start smoke, no issues, no strut tower mushrooming, no body rust.

It is a late model r52 convertible John Cooper Works edition - some call the 2007 and 2008 Minis the "last of the supercharged" minis as in 2009 it went to the turbo engine (for the vert, and I think in a year or two earlier for the coupe). It has low miles for its age and the paint has been corrected and looks fantastic.  No mods were done to the engine (I wanted to maintain its originality), but all common wear parts like engine mounts, front and rear upper strut bearings, oil seals, plugs, serpentine belt, fluids, JCW and cabin filter, etc. have been changed while in my care (3 years).  All services and maintenance intervals are up to date.

If a part made the car look old, especially on the exterior, it was replaced with OEM new. For example: rear tail lights, most window moldings, all wheel arches, rear soft top moldings, belly pan, antenna base, all bumper grilles are all new. You will not find a faded molding or top. The canvas top is well maintained and very black still; I'd guess a previous owner must have replaced it, or this car spent most of its life indoors.

This Mini is also LOADED with Factory options!  This Chili-red exterior, panther black leather interior Mini comes with nearly every available option. Factory options include:

  • Factory John Cooper Works kit
  • Full Aero kit (front & rear bumpers & side skirts)
  • JCW Sound Kit (JCW intake and exhaust)
  • Sports suspension (stock JCW springs with Koni FSD dampers)
  • Manual Transmission
  • Rear fog lamp
  • Driving lights package (upgraded with PIAAs)
  • Xenon lights
  • Heated front seats
  • Sports seat with height adjustment
  • Harman Kardon sound system with CD player
  • Rain sensor
  • Fog lights
  • Storage compartment package
  • Smokers package (coin holder)
  • Body colored (chili red) mirror caps (black vinyl is on them now, easily removable)
  • Auto dim rear view mirror
  • Chrome line interior
  • Interior surfaces from exterior color (red dash and door sections)
  • Front arm rest
  • Integrated garage remote control (Homelink)
  • Heated windshield washer nozzles
  • Sports leather & multifunction steering wheel
  • Park distance control (PDC backup sensors)
  • Illuminated JCW door sills
  • Dynamic stability control (DSC)
  • Limited slip differential (LSD)
  • Auto A/C
  • Front rubber mats, carpet rears
Mods:

There are no engine modifications, as I wanted to keep it reliable and stock. It has plenty of power to be fun anyway. Most upgrades were done to enhance the handling characteristics, and only the highest quality parts were chosen (except for the little front JCW grille badge, as I found out below ). Modifications include:
  • IE Camber plates ($200) (stiffens front towers and prevents mushrooming, also adds 1 degree of camber for better cornering grip)
  • WMW front strut tower bar ($245) (Further stiffens front of car and prevents mushrooming)
  • Koni Special Active Struts ($980) (These FSD shocks are rigid when cornering, but plush when driving straight. Cool tech - look them up)
  • Hotchkis 25mm Rear Sway Bar ($310) (Makes a huge difference to the flatness and stability in cornering, and its adjustable to suit preference.)
  • Hotchkis rear upper and lower Competition Rear Camber Links ($595) (allows for finer adjustment of rear wheels, and, well, they look really cool)
  • Cravenspeed adjustable Short Shift Kit ($200) (Reduces shifter slop. Without tools, you can make the shifter either shorter, or longer than stock. I kept it on the short side)
  • JCW F57 shift **** ($100, original included) (looks and feels cool to me, original **** is included if you want it)
  • 17x7 Advanti DST Storm rims w/Potenza extreme performance summer tires RE-71R 205/45 ($840+$720) (I have never had rubber this sticky, an amazing tire)
  • WMW SS brake lines ($100) (Improved brake feel and safety)
  • Polyflex lower engine mount poly inserts ($50) (Gives the throttle a more immediate and positive feel)
  • German performance shop alignment ($200) (tracks straight, no uneven tire wear)
  • PIAA 510 Xtra driving lights ($250) (Original ones were a bit tarnished, so I swapped them out. These are brighter and the black color meshes better too. The PIAA covers are easily removable for a more classic look.)
  • Bluetooth phone/music module ($45) (works great - hands-free calling and music streaming)
  • Stubby Radio Antenna ($20) (just for aesthetics)
Oil change Summer 2020 (two oil changes in the last 3 years/10K miles have been completed).
New wipers, cabin filter, overall check Fall 2020.

The bad:
Paint: There is a minor nickel-sized dent on the hood near the driver's headlight. Some tiny paint chips on the hood. There is a tiny area on the passenger door edge that has a chipped clearcoat.

Currently the auto sensing wipers work intermittently (pun intended). I believe this is because the sensor mount has delaminated slightly from the window, and this may just need to be glued back on. 2nd and 3rd speed wiper settings work perfectly.

There is a very small chip in the windshield. I expected it to grow and fix the wiper sensing problem above for free (a new sensor mount would come with a new windshield) because I have "no charge" glass coverage, but it has not grown in the three years I've owned the car.

[edit; I don't know how to change the add from a 2008 to a 2007. not sure how that happened, but it is a 2007]

What year is your JCW Mini with the Aero package? The R50, R52 & R53 "S" models were supercharged in 2002-2006(first gen) ; then Mini went to turbocharged in 2007 and up on the JCW & "S" models??? The R52 MK1 was never made in 2007-2008 ...

You are wrong here. They didn’t make the switch to the turbo motor in the convertible until mid 2008 if I’m not mistaken.

Convertible R52s 1st Gen was supercharged and available until 2008.
The R57s Turbo 2nd Gen available here Feb 2007.

I'd be suspect of this red one being factory or even a genuine "Aero" JCW.
1) There was no such thing except for the fact one could order the Aero package and it was installed at the port which would have included a 1st Gen Badge for the grille.
2) This car has what appears to be a Chinese JCW badge knockoff in the front grill.
3) Would like to see the JCW factory documents / underhood valve cover badge with kit serial number before laying down any $$$

Update: I ran vin in MINI Part data, TJ44505 - comes up as having JCW Injectors from factory - so a JCW, apparently just has incorrect badge for front lower grille.

Question

[QUOTE=Jason Cornelius;4565088]You are wrong here. They didn’t make the switch to the turbo motor in the convertible until mid 2008 if I’m not mistaken.[/

As you Mini Cooper buffs know, the previous-generation S was supercharged while the current one is turbocharged. Before this version debuted and I had heard that Mini was switching from super- to turbocharging, it struck me odd. Granted, Toyota had done this with the MR2 -- the first gen had a supercharged version, while the second-gen went to turbocharging. But isn't supercharging usually better in terms of a no-lag, right-now boost in performance?

While old common wisdom might've held that viewpoint, the fact is that today's turbochargers have virtually no lag. And I can vouch for that, having enjoyed our Cooper S over the long weekend. Of course, the power builds as the revs climb, and it's a thrilling rush that can make the steering wheel wiggle around some as the tires eagerly scrabble for grip. Yet down low, it never feels flat. Just for kicks, I compared the performance of our Cooper S versus the previous generation:

2006 Cooper S (Supercharged 1.6 liter I4, 168 hp):

0-60: 7.4 seconds. Quarter Mile: 15.6 seconds.

2007 Cooper S (Turbocharged 1.6 liter I4, 172 hp):

0-60: 6.5 seconds. Quarter Mile: 14.9 seconds.

Furthermore, the current-gen Cooper S has such a full-bodied powerband that passing on the freeway doesn't require a down change to fifth, just lean into it and it moves out with plenty of gusto to blast by those dawdling trucks and SUVs.

John DiPietro, Automotive Editor @ 11,770 miles.

I beg to differ here because your Mini Cabriolet has the R53 headlights mounted in the hood while the 2007 Mini had the headlights mounted to the inner fender structure.Judging by the pictures your Mini is not a Gen2 , unless the R53 (Gen 1 )S/C was still in production past 2006? ...

Yes Jason is correct, my car has a build date of mid 2007 and absolutely is supercharged. The mini convertibles went 2 years longer as a mk1, thus the last of the supercharged (LOTS) notation. I guess some consider the 2008 the true LOTS, but the r52 did not change from 2007, to 2008, so I dunno, its the same car.

If memory serves, my car is 6.6 sec 0-60, quite a bit faster than a normal S, and inline with the next gen turbo cars. The benefit of the supercharged cars is that the power is immediate and balanced. There is no spooling and, of course, you get that supercharger whine as the revs increase, which is really fun to hear and adds to the character to the car. I've owned a few turbo cars and you always find yourself driving around the turbo. I like superchargers so much, that I also own a 2018 ZL1. From a driver's perspective, its the best technology to get air compressed power.

Euro, you are perceptive! This is absolutely a factory JCW, and I can shoot pics of the badge and CAI if someone likes. I am not certain if the aero package came on the car from the factory, but its my understanding that this car was ordered that way. Upon researching this, I discovered that many later model aeros like mine came prepainted etc, but perhaps it was still port installed?! I have no way of verifying that. When I got this car, it had more bumps and bruises on both bumpers than I liked (wanted it all near perfect). Rather than try and fix them, I decided to buy a new Aero kit (It was about a $3k job all in after the kit, shipping, paint and install). I didn't realize at the time, but it was INCREDIBLY hard to find a replacement aero kit. It took 2 months of searching, and 3 months of delivery time to retrieve the kit from Germany. I was told that I received the last new kit off the shelf in all of Germany. Who knows if this is true, but this kit has been US NLA for a long time and it is very, very rare.

So, I had the kit prepped, primed and painted when it came here, and it was put on the car. BTW, I have the rear bumper stickers but never opted to put them on. The kit does not come with a front emblem, so I ordered one online. I didn't know it was a Chinese one at the time, as it looked good, but some paint is coming off the badge after just two years, so I guess thats a tell tale sign that it is. Its very easy to install with just two nuts and if thats a show stopper for someone, I'm happy to buy a new oem one and install it, or discount my price accordingly.

When I had the bumpers put on, I had the entire car paint corrected, and it looks amazing. It has always been protected with Liquid Glass polish/wax.

BTW, you can verify my options list here: http://bimmer.work/vin/t7116594f8753...2d4ae2a554e37/

Euro, you may know this, my car also has illuminated door sills, was that standard on my car, or were they added later, any idea? I searched a bit and couldn't figure it out.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co.../market/352159 here is an 08 supercharged jcw that just sold recently. Just saying there are some out there. Before coping and pasting some article maybe you should do some more homework, they made the swap in mid 2008 or so. Hell I’ll search the forum here because I know damn good and well that info is here.

Hell just reading some of the r52 07/08’s threads and those guys are ordering parts for an 06 because of this. Way made a special section for them on his website just for the reason.

Great looking Chili Red R52 JCW.

Some tidbits of info. The Aero body kits could be port installed, dealer installed, or self installed. The illuminated door sills are pretty rare. Those were also an after-sales accessory, same as the body kits. Neither were factory installed back in those days.

Ok, thanks for the kind words and confirmation. I was surprised how many options and accessories are on this car once I started to research it more. I was wondering what options/tech aren't on this car (beyond the plethora of aesthetic choices already made that would overlap)! It has to be a small list, no?

Just a short handful of additional factory options were available like navigation, chrono gauges, English leather seats.

Cool, gotcha. So I'm most of the way there. With iphones/androids, not having Nav might be a benefit these days!

Is there any easy way to figure out the original MSRP?

Without the original sticker to know what dealer options came in the car there isn’t a good way to know the MSRP. Another issue is that with so much dealer/port installed equipment it would be hard to guess the labor cost that was attached to the car.

As for factory options, the English leather seats JackMac mentioned were only available as part of the factory “sidewalk” package, which then restricted your exterior color choices (red wasn’t one of them). So as far as “factory options” I think this car has almost everything one could have ordered, and it has a good portion of the dealer/port installed options.

If the aero kit and illuminated sills came on the car, I’d guess this was a $40k+ car sitting on the lot. My first MINI was a very late 2006 R52s and it had a very similar factory option list minus a a good bit of what this car has and my MSRP was $30k. Add a few hundred for heated seats and the convenience package and then $6500 for JCW, $2500 for the aero kit, and another $500 for sills and $40k is right there.

I'll take chrono gauges over the factory Nav anyday...

So with that said, It could be argued there are no further options that could have been added?

The ones listed above, plus R98 “Web Spoke” wheels were an upgrade on the sport pack, steptronic transmission, chromeline exterior, and metallic paint are the remaining factory options not on your car.

Next are the dealer accessories which could push some cars over $50k USD back in the day. Rare, but I’ve seen them.

Factory price list attached for the 2008 R52

You the man Jack! My car had web spokes on it but they were in bad shape, so I bought new wheels. I still have the old set if someone wanted to re-true/refinish them.. Thanks.
