I'll throw a little route I like.
I live in the Landmark area of Alexandria and work in Georgetown. When 395 closed after 9/11, I was forced to find a side route. What I found is actually a fairly pleasant driving route. (I wasn't the only one who found it. It's been fairly well used ever since).
Those in Arlington know it as Walter Reed and those in Alexandria know it as Bouregard. It's a nice green, four-lane, mostly boulevard style road with a few twists and dips. It connects Duke St/Little River Turnpike actually (on that side of the 395) and crosses Seminary, King, 4 Mile Run, Glebe and Columbia before runnint into Rt 50. It continues across 50, but it's two-lane and mostly residential with speed bumps.
I still use it as an alternative to 395 when I'm not in the mood to mess with the traffic. The Beuregard section has access to some nice restaurants and a handy shopping center.
I've not seen police there in waiting, but they do get around. Most times, the only thing limiting your speed is your conscience.

Concur that this is an enjoyable/convenient by-pass, from Arlington to Seminary Rd. and beyond (and my conscience--for better or for worse--takes the backseat.)
Some additional fun events:
The Flying Circus, Bealeton, Va. (http://usuaclub1.org/FlyingCircusDirectionsMap.htm): Believe it's still in operation. Air shows on weekends; Air balloon shows annually; car clubs usually get discounts for entry. Great weekend family fun.
Bengies Drive-In Theather, Baltimore, Md. (http://www.bengies.com/main.html) Check link for tons of info. "The Italian Job" will be shown July 3rd-5th.
RFK Stadium on Game day: (am a die-hard fan of DC United, US Men/Women National Soccer Teams, and soccer in general) Come join the Screaming Eagles to cheer for the only winning professional sports franchise in the DC metro area. Also, the '03 Women's World Cup Openning games will be at RFK, with Team USA scheduled to play one of the double-headers (http://www.ussoccer.com/news/fullsto...?inewsid=37497). Bring your daughters to witness the US Women in their full Red-White-and-Blue glory.
Other fun, scenic twisties: (am stealing a page from my old club, http://www.mscw.com/Miata2002/National_Routes.htm). Some fun, (not so) lazy drives for a weekend.
Enjoy!
