I special ordered this car in August 2005 and it was finally delivered in late February 2006. We carefully picked the equipment to make sure we had all the optional convenience features we needed for daily driving duties as well as a classic color combination.
Since that time it has been a reliable daily driver. I have enjoyed driving it, maintaining it, and adding upgrades to enhance both looks and performance without compromising reliabilityor daily drivability.

UPGRADES

This MINI is equipped with the performance bits from the Dinan S1 R53 Performance package including exhaust, air intake, and performance software. Dinan Engineering provides performance upgrades for BMW’s, and in the mid 2000’s they also offered performance packages for the R53 MINI Cooper S. Dinan is unique among performance tuners in that they were approved by BMW / MINI. This means that their quality is second to none, and the upgrades add performance and enjoyment without compromising reliabilityor drivability. Further, installation of Dinan parts did not affect the new car warranty. At the time, several BMW dealers were Dinan resellers. The parts were professionally installed at the Dinan headquarters in Mountain View CA in August 2006. The exhaust note is louder than stock, but not obnoxious, and the performance bump very noticeable over a stock MINI.

• John Cooper Works grille. Many people only do the hood portion of this upgrade due to the difficulty involved in replacing the front bumper portion,but this one was done correctly.
• OZ lightweight wheels, two of which have lightscuffs. They are shod with new Continental DW tires. I still the original MINI wheels which I am happy to substitute. The original MINI wheels are in perfect undamaged condition.
• 35% front and back window tinting
• White front side markers.
• Auto windows up module.
• VIP upper engine mount bracket (helps preventdeterioration of the fragile engine mount.)

The car has always been garaged, hand washed, detailed regularly, and more importantly maintained well beyond the suggested MINI schedule.
About maintenance: MINI’s mantra at the time was that motor oil was good for 15,000 miles and transmission oil was good for life. This is thought by many to be too long and lead to early mechanical failure.
In contrast, this car has had a break in oil change at 1,700 miles, then regular oil changes at no more than 7,500 mile intervals. The transmission oil has been replaced at 38k miles and again at 70k miles. Compared that to most MINI’s that are still running on their factory fills.


In addition, spark plugs, serpentine belt, brake fluid, and coolant have also been replaced at reasonable intervals.
The OZ wheels have Continental DW summer performance tireswith 3,000 miles on them. If you opt forthe original MINI wheels, those are equipped with Michelin tires with lots of tread left.


I have every record for this car, as well as the window sticker, manuals, and both keys.

This car has been incredibly reliable and has only required replacement of the upper engine mount and the lower control arm bushings, both of which are normal wear parts on this vehicle. MINI made a multitude of changes to the 2005 and 2006 model years, and these last two years of production for the R53 body are thought to be the bestof any MINI you can have. Based on experience, I have to agree.


The car did suffer a parking lot hit in the rear in June of2013. The rear bumper cover was replaced, and the driver’s side quarter panel had a small repair. This damage was minor and repaired by a highly rated MINI collision specialist.


I wish we had enough room in the garage to keep this car which is already a modern classic. We have enjoyed it tremendously and hope that it goes to an enthusiastwho will enjoy it as much as we did and give it the care that it deserves.
