Wink In the Rust Belt

Year: 2006
Make: MINI
Model: Hardtop
Price: $1
Mileage: 100
Color: red
Private or Dealer Listing: Private Listing
Location (Region): Midwestern

Mot of the Mini owners don't care about or know what is original... to most, they are just cars...
But yea... when you do know... it sticks out like a codpiece on a Nun.

The photo under the hood reminds me of all the years I lived and wrenched in the Detroit area.
Makes me appreciate the lack of corrosion on the Cali cars...

He thinks it’s a JCW. It’s not.

Happy to have moved to AZ from east Detroit as a teenager before I really started working on cars! Oh that rust and winter grime! Poor cars!

He’s also quoted specs for the original 40th Anniversary Limited Edition, which I like, because I used to own one!!

FB Marketplace has a pretty horrible interface, and often I've read that sellers when posting have difficulty with giving accurate title description due to some sort of auto-fill thing...

...I have long been a hater of FB due to ethical concerns, plus I am fundamentally against their "walled garden" model of requiring membership to view full content.

That said,
I actually joined up yesterday dammit because ever after CL implemented the $5 ad charge it seems less active, and FB has such a large mass of users that bargain % ratio may be higher.

Immediately found something I wouldn't mind having,
a set of pukka Minilites!

Although they are likely on the heavy side, I just think they're the mutts nuts because authentic old school England.

Seller asking $300 which is a great price. I have sent a message. So much scamming going on these days he may think I'm a scammer since new user with no content, but I made sure to coherently form pertinent sentences LOL ad is 20 weeks old though, he might not even have them anymore?

Yes you can find a ton of goodies on FB, but you have to be careful. Last guy I dealt with regarding aero side skirts wanted me to send him the money, and then would take them off the car, obviously I told him to pound sand. I usually look at the profile before even making contact. Most times, especially with a car, you’ll see pics of the vehicle in their profile, but not always.

If that listing is 20 weeks old, chances are they’re gone, as most don’t take the time to mark the item as sold, and the listing remains, but worth a try. Happy hunting!

Thanks for the advice, yeah everything is so sketchy nowadays you gotta be extra careful!

Even beyond the rampant online scamming,
people so crazy because precious metals are so skyrocket that catalytic converter theft has become a worldwide epidemic, jeez.

I'm already having lots of fun looking on FB at previously locked-to-me content, so I guess it's cool even though I have a bit of self-guilt for giving into it and sacrificing personal principle for the mad hunt of rare hard-to-find parts! LOL

A few good groups to join, just realize they also include UK etc. they usually just automatically let you in, regardless of the questions they ask.

Got spurred to look at recent cat theft stories...

...was thinking my little MINI would be safe from cat theft due to low ride height, but lately I've read many thieves are using a tow truck to move the car to cut the cat in a different location, others just use a floor jack in broad daylight!

Good Deals on CL-lmflgqy.png

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-driveway.html

This is the shocking moment brazen thieves jack up a car parked outside its owner's home and steals the catalytic converter in a five-minute daylight raid.

The car owner was inside his home in Hurley, North Warwickshire, eating his dinner but neither he nor other family members heard the thieves who struck at around 5.30pm on Sunday, March 7.

The victim's daughter, who did not want to be named, said: 'My mum and dad are pretty shaken up.'

Speaking more of precious metals,
my sis works at NAPA and a couple months back she told me that they were having problems with certain iridium plugs going out-of-stock and not able to order more, I looked into it and discovered that there's an iridium shortage due to increased demand and the price for raw material has skyrocketed, if it continues to climb higher then you can expect sparkplug manufacturers to abandon use of it since it wouldn't make financial sense for them.

Tight supply and hydrogen hopes drive iridium up 160%

LONDON (Reuters)

Iridium has become the latest precious metal to undergo a spectacular price rally, after supply shortages and expectations it will be used to produce hydrogen to power a greener economy lifted its value by 160% in two months.

The difficulty of raising output means prices could rise further, analysts said.

A byproduct of platinum and palladium mining, iridium is vital for many industries. In shipping, it enables the chlorination of ballast water to stop vessels transporting invasive marine species, and for electronics, it is used in crucibles able to withstand the heat of crystal-making.

It can also serve as a catalyst in electrolysis to split water into oxygen and hydrogen, which is increasingly in demand as a cleaner source of power than fossil fuels.

Prices have climbed to a record high of $4,390 an ounce from $1,685 on Dec. 12, accelerating a rally that began in 2016, when iridium cost around $500 an ounce.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-p...-idUSKBN2AC1DG

:

The price has climbed even higher since that article was published on Feb. 12th.

A few years back, when aluminum was getting expensive, i took down some downspouts from a customers house and put them in the back yard. Next morning I came back, they were gone. They also break into empty houses and apartments and rip out all the copper plumbing. Nice. Good time to own a gun lol.

Nature has a way of 'sorting out' those who crawl under cars supported only by a Halsford's floor jack on sloped grass.

Found at least one example here on NAM:

I don't think it was very cheap either.

Yes the Hamann stuff was and still is expensive stuff. This is our Dinan S2

Here’s a question tho... sincere question.

Is a sub 30k-mile MC40 in good shape from PNW worth $12k ... even though he has no clue how to type up his ad ?

Say it was just a 28k-mile CR 2004 MCS with a CF DASH, R90’s and no cruise control .... what would that be worth??

Was that BAT non JCW MC40 worth $19k??

makes me ponder 🤔

Seems the aftermarket wheels have already caused a BaT stir on this GP2: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...r-s-jcw-gp-19/

My pops sent me this 2017 JCW convertible today, more for the trailer novelty than anything: https://tucson.craigslist.org/cto/d/...298431386.html

I’m often surprised at the juvenile commentary on Bat, particularly on the lower end vehicles like the minis. I don’t follow the premium listings much, but I’m sure there’s less verbal diarrhea occurring on those listing, and probably a lot more knowledge based input. The yellow mini up there now had some genius post stating that “back to black” was a great product to use on black plastic...it even got a +1...really? too bad the minis draw in such *****. glad Manhattan1 got called out for being such a ****.

I think the wheels don’t do much for the car either, but I wouldn’t post that up on the guys auction, if you don’t like them, don’t bid.

I think that in the not-too-distant future people will be talking about the crazy "BaT bubble" and how the market went berserk because nostalgia...

Amen .. I agree. I see so many local one owner cars being sold in less than 24 hours on craigslist only to show up on BaT a few months later and often sell for nearly twice the price. A 70K mile slicktop manual sport seats 6 speed BMW 325i was sold by the first owner for $7500 (I was second to buy on the list with plans to keep it long term) and sold 4 months later for $14,000 on BaT.

Its a really great story if the Buyer’s comments are true, which seems like they are. It actually sounds like the kind of story you’ll read on Jalopnik some day, after the story is complete with the big reveal of the car.

However, there was at least one other bidder that drove the price that high and nostalgia could have been the reason, or it could have been a shill bidder. Does anyone know how BaT prevents this, or what happens if a winning bidder backs out of the purchase?

I can assure you that there is plenty of juvenile commentary on the premium listings too. I spend a lot of time on the M3 auctions, and the Ford GT ones . . and some of the commenting that goes on on those is ridiculous.
