Will this work? (OEM CD changer + aux input)

n00b question:

Have an '03 OEM HU (HK, not that it matters).

Is it possible to add an aux input (non-iPod) to the factory HU and still maintain the OEM 6-disc changer? Or do they use the same pins on the back of the HU? I.e., is it an either/or proposition?

I am thinking about adding an HK Drive+Play to my OEM system through the aux port, but would kinda like to keep the factory changer.

Much thanks, and apologies as this has doubtless been covered before (but my n00b search skills couldn't find a definitive answer).

Yep, not an issue. Separate connections. The CD changer cable plugs in a completely separate part of the back of the HU. The only pin conflict with the OEM Aux Input that I've seen is with the factory Nav - if you have it, there are two pins for the voice directions that have to be transferred to the Aux Input connector. If you don't have the OEM/factory Nav, it's not an issue.

Good point, but I don't believe the cassette unit (nor the MiniDisc unit) was ever sold in the USA... at least I haven't heard of one!

Also, I should add that early MINI head units (pre-03, I believe) did not support the Aux Input either.

Thanks for all the great input.

1. Unit is an '03
2. No cassette, MD, or NAV

Since the Drive + Play 2 is out, the Drive + Play 1 is available at Best Buy for $80, so I just might spring for this set-up.

As long as you have Boost (CD Radio), you are fine for AUX. However I would hihgly recommend the DICE kit over the D&P:

Just to name a few. Especially the fact that the DICE integrates with the MINI rather than sticking a separate joystick and billboard which clutters up the interior.

Good points, but I don't have an '05+ radio, and I like the idea of a larger
display and more functional control surface with D&P.

BTW, the Drive + Play has an option for a direct connection through an AUX in (hence my original question) as well as an FM modulated connection.

And while I am sure your product is a fine product (epsecially for '05+ owners), the Drive + Play is about half the cost.

You're correct, but $80 for the D&P and $39 for the AUX, factor in shipping for both pieces and you're paying the same price as you would with the DICE.

Ahhh, but I can get the D+P for $80 locally (i.e., no shipping) and I will make the AUX cable for <$4.

So, not even close.

No AUX in on cassette

Mike; Saw your post in this thread. If you give up the voice on the NAV on a car with WAVE cassette, can you then access AUX in?

Nav cars dont come with Wave
So you must have boost cassette
cassette boost dont have aux in - nav or not
You could convert the cd changer input to aux in if no changer is connected

Cassette was sold in the US, as I have one in my car.
The original owner wanted cassette for some reason and now I am stuck not able to have an aux port.

Don't be sad... just imagine how jealous people would be if you had the ability to play such things as this when you're motoring...

I know I would be jealous. (has anyone ever put an 8-track in their mini?)

How interesting - I stand corrected!

However, don't worry - it's very easy to swap out head units, so you can gain CD and Aux Input very easily if you are willing to buy a new HU. You don't even have to buy a new one, as I'm sure many MINI owners who decide to put an aftermarket HU in their car would be happy to sell their OEM one!

Or going the DICE route eliminates all this confusion. You get total iPod integration and AUX at the same time.
