Radio Mute / HU pinouts
I am installing a Motorola T605 Bluetooth adapter kit into my 2003 Mini with H/K audio upgrade. I think I know how I want to wire everything, but while doing some online research, I found this pin-out of the HU (link below) and noticed there is pin 10 & 11 in group A, and pin 6 and 12 in group C that seem like they might work well for me and my application. I have read about this advanced mute capability but haven't really found anything in terms of how to do it, aside from instruction to just buy a plug & play adapter for about $100. I also found the OEM MINI bluetooth kit instructions (link below) which utilize those same 4 pins (probably for the same use I would like to get out of them).
If anyone can guide me in how to wire this mute option or if it is even possible, it would be most helpful.

I was not able to get these to actually mute the radio when I hooked up the T605. The radio just seemed to ignore them but I was trying temporary pins I harvested out of a computer fan harness from an old computer (there is actually a thread on this, look up DIY AUX input cable). I came to the conclusion that I had two choices:
1. Buy the $100 plug and play adapter plus the $20 additional harness necessary to get this all to connect correctly.
2. Just install the little speaker that comes with the T605 kit.
I called installer.com and talked to them about the adapter and about trying to just hook the T605 into the HK radio. They said that if I needed the $100 adapter because the T605 output an amplified signal to the radio and the radio would receive that and amplify it even more. They claimed this would cause distortion and make the call sound really bad. The $100 adapter would step down the signal from the T605 and work with the radio better.
So I went with the little speaker that comes with the T605. I can always get the adapter later and hook everything up to it and remove the speaker.
To install the speaker I went to a hardware store and got some bolts with nylon threaded nuts and washers. I think these were #8 an 1 3/4 inches long. I used these to install the speaker bracket to the grate in the plastic piece that is below the toggle switches. I threaded the wire through this grate as well and then put it all back together. The sound is pretty good. Easy to hear and easy to control the volume using the T605 vol controls. The speaker is partially hidden. You can see it if you look for it but since I used the grate holes I can remove it at any time with no holes left behind (that were not there in the first place. The only real downside for me is that the radio and CD player don't mute when a call comes in. This is a minor issue that requires two button pushes; one to turn off the radio and one to answer the call. It also allows me to answer a call without having the radio on. I'm not sure if the $100 adapter would turn the radio on when a call comes in or not.
Please let us know what you end up doing to get this installed, especially if you figure out how to connect to the radio with or without the adapter.

flannery, thanks for the quick and detailed response, I really appreciate it.
I spent alot of time trying to figure out how to get the mute to work, but in the end, I got nowhere. I did not know what type of signal would trigger the mute (digital signal, +12VDC, Ground, etc?) nor did I have any means of making a reliable connection to the pins on the back of the radio to test with. Also, in my research, I kept reading that MINIs built before 9/03 with H/K sound upgrade (my car falls into this category), would not have the ability to have mute. So in an effort to save time, I gave up.
I'm sure the adapter harness that several vendors sell would work, but it is very expensive (for what it is), and i'm not even sure if it will ultimately work with my car.
I did, however, finish installing the Motorola T605 bluetooth kit in the car and everything seems to be working very well. I mounted the speaker and black box behind the plastic cover underneath the steering wheel/column. I mounted the interface module on the lower left of the speedo trim cover, and the microphone to the blank plastic cover to the right of the sunroof control switch (this is the location where the OEM bluetooth mic. would go).
I will try and get some pics up of the finished installation soon.
Btw, I accidently triggered the airbag light when I removed the driver side seat during the installation. Is this a light that can only be cleared with a dealer's or shop's GT1/Autologic computer? Ugh, I hope I can do it myself.

If you've triggered the airbag light, the dealer has to clear it. From what I've read on some other posts, the fault is caused by turning on the ignition when the seat is electrically disconnected from the car.
Be prepared to pay....the dealer has to ensure the system is working properly. I think it is about $120 to get the system checked and the fault cleared.
Good luck!
