Harmon Kardon amp Option?

Hi,

I have a 2002 Mini Cooper that came without the Harmon Kardon Amp that should be located on the passenger side in the rear compartment.

I was wondering, will it work if I get a stock HK amp to be installed in? If I do get it, will I need to new wiring all way to my new Clarion NZ500? I dont see a HK wiring anywhere on the passenger side to connect it only the CD changer connections.

Or what it be better to get an aftermarket AMP? I would prefer a small amp top fit in the compartment.

Any advice?

HK is an all in one solution (wiring, 1 ohm speakers, and amp), and will not work parted out. You will have to go with an aftermarket solution.

Thanks for letting me know. I thought I would need to go aftermarket.

I may as well look for an aftermarket amp. Do you know what is the stock dimension for the HK so that I can install a small amp in the compartment. Do you know a good amp small brand name that will fit easy inside?

Let me know thanks.

Don't know off hand, but I don't think you are going to find anything decent that will fit. Check with Mikey at www.newministuff.com (send an e-mail) and see if he would know what might fit. Mikey is big in the MINI community and a huge help for all things ICE.

I just brought an Pyle Amplifier Part #PLMRA400. The size is 7.87"W x 2"H x 8"L.

I am hoping that is a good amp to be installed in the rear quarter panel.

Does anyone know how to mount the amp and what is the best way to secure it? Does anyone know what is the thread size in the rear quarter panel for a nut to hold onto the amp?

Picture would help.

Let me know thanks.

I'm not sure you're following what Daflake is saying; the dimensions of the amp will be the least of your concerns, after replacing all of the wiring, the speakers, and presumably the head unit.

Thanks, I did followed what Daflake was saying. I have the small size amp and I did try to fit it in and it looks like a prefect size. I will have to get new wiring all the way to the front with my new Clarion audio.

I just needed to know how I can mount the amp and wanted to know what size thread nut to use.

That amp should fit - barely. You are limited on height at that width. A simple solution for mounting is one of 3M's VHB foam tapes, and attach it to the wheel well. You will probably be ok on heat - that amp is about 100W total, rather than per channel as listed.

We use a custom metal bracket that we designed, and are using ARC's line of small, high-power amps until we bring amp production in-house. If you are real handy with metal you could try to replicate it. The same bracket fits R50/3 and R56 MINI's, and mounts the 2 or 4 channel:

Thanks, I never thought of a 3M Tape. I could use that.

That looks like a good bracket setup.

I searched around and I think the thread size is 10mm x 1.0mm. So I am assuming to get that nut size.

I just got my Mini Cooper audio installed in yesterday at the shop.

Installed:
-Clarion NZ500 in dash,
-Under passenger seat subwoofer Kenwood KSC-Sw01: 150 Watts 7.0625" W x 2.75" H x 10.625" D Weight 5.3Lbs
-Pyle 400W 4 Channel Amplifier 7.87" W x 2" H x 8" L Weight 3.3Lbs
-And other wiring kits...etc.

I am not sure how they installed the amp in the rear passenger side, but the thread nut size is M6 x 1.0mm.

So far I am impressed with the sound in my car.

I came across this youtube video which is exactly what I want to do with my car. Keep everything stock (HK sound set up) with a brand new aftermarket AMP.
