USB limited song playback

Have a few 8GB USB flash drives. I like to fill them up (no Playlists) with assorted songs and hit Random Play. However I keep getting repeats. It seems to only play the same songs (maybe 30 or 40) over and over and over. I can't find any method to the madness as to why it seems to only select a few off the USB and repeat them while ignore all the rest.

Is there a limit as to how many songs that can read on one drive? Is there a way to "force" it to read the entire flash drive?

Been there. Do you have your songs in folders? For example, all the songs from a particular artist in one folder? Random ONLY works for the songs in the folder you are listening too. If you want truly random play of ALL your music, then all songs must be in ONE folder. Puzzled me at first, but actually found the answer in the manual.

Having all your songs in one folder isn't really a big deal. When the USB drive is connected the first time, the radio will scan all the songs and separate into categories (ie genre, artist, album, etc). Will do this for up to 5 different USB drives. How it does this, I have no idea..

I think sometimes it is sensitive to naming of the song titles; any odd characters or punctuation marks used? Like starting off with a space (blank).

Could be, but also think their might be some meta data encoded in the beginning of the music file? Another thing I discovered is the mini will play just about any music file type (ie mp3, wav, etc).

Will it play AAC (MP4) files too???

I just put the music/MP3s in one folder or just on the flash drive "root".

I use iTunes to convert ALAC to MP3s. The files are named track number (or album huber) before the name.

Examples: 02 Wonderful Tonight.mp3 and 2-11 Don't Bring Me Down.mp3

Wonder if I should try some other App to convert the music to MP3s.

I'm fairly certain it will play any music file. I haven't tried all formats, so there might be a few out there it won't play. Yes, you can put them in the root directory. Since it's formatted as fat 32, I think there is a 255 file count limit. I just created a folder called 'Music' and placed them all in there, as there is no file count limit.

It will play AAC.

Also you may have hit my problem. I have been using OS X for so many years I forgot about fat being a DOS holdover. I'm putting about 1500 songs in the root. I may just be getting 256 repeated and it seems like a lot less knowing I have so much more. I will make a folder and put them in it. Hopefully that will work.

Flash Drive

Well,

I use a flash drive I think 64GB. 2013 with Nav System. I like it better than using cable and iTouch. Folders. No play lists. Works for me. Album Artwork displays fine.

My music is in an iMac at home using iTunes. If that helps. There are additional files that might be a problem if using Windows.

No expert, and it works well on wife's Countryman with no Nav system. Just stock radio.
