Gen 3 audio specs.

Does anyone have the specs for the audio in the gen 3 minis?

I'm thinking about changing my 2012 clubman to a gen 3 Cooper SD but have a concern regarding the front door speakers.

By the looks of it, mini have got rid of the lower door speaker? Is this across the range?

Has anyone upgraded the audio in a gen 3?
What size are the speakers?

Have you heard the stereo in the gen 3? Honestly you would be better off going aftermarket, the new sound systems, even the HK are seriously lacking imo.

Do yourself the favor and go aftermarket. Theres a lot of options out there. If you need any help with anything on it hit me up the shop I used to work at did a couple clubbies and I did a few builds on my 07. The 3rd gen speakers are all a 4" component set in the H/K at least.

Oh im definately going after market equipment, of which I have a lot of already in my 2012 Clubman, but next week I pick up a F56 Cooper SD, so was inquiring about its standard setup etc

I have in my Clubman at the moment the following:

Audison Bit One
Audison Bit Play HD
Hybrid Audio L6v2
Hybrid Audio L1 Pro
Alpine F6 amp
Alpine M12 amp
Diamond Audio TDX12

So play to install most of the equipment into the F56

4x 4 inch and 2x 6.5 subs under the seats on the base cooper s stereo.

Keep the audison and alpine stuff, get a set or morel 4 inch components,2 4 inch morel mid woofers and a 10 inch morel shallow mount sub.Focal, rainbow and gladen make underseat 8 inch subs for bmw fxx series cars that the mini is based on.

Had those amps in my r56! Ran focals then morels in the r56. The morel drivers and the Alpine amps are made for each other.

I would most likely buy a set of 4" Hybrid Audio mids or something for the front and look at the floor speakers positioning/depth/specs etc and consider what to replace it with. Ill see if I can hold of some spare floor speakers too.

Having gutted my F56. There is not much room to install stuff behind the panels. Also the HK system use Canbus. This means you have to plug the HK amp in when you go for service or they can't upgrade the software.

CANBUS? You mean MOST??

My F56 does not have an amp, it does have the media XL and so on package. No HK or amps. Has 4" speakers in the doors and im guessing 6.5" woofers under the seats.

Does anyone know if my set up uses optical connection? Or has it even without an amp? I tried earlier to take a look behind the media screen for a optical cable but wasnt successful in fully taking the screen secion out to see the connections at the back of it.

look up Canbus. It's the central nervous system that integrates all the computers and knows if things are working or not.
The Head Unit has 4 line level outputs. Same on base and HK system.

Does it not also run on a MOST system? I understand with the HK system is connected by optical?

Do you have any pictures of the car when you gutted it?

Thanks Gregory, ive read a few of your threads, very informative info there, thanks

Im still looking into the connections side of things to get my audio kit installed into my F56 soon.

So, if (in my set up which does not have HK) I could tap into the speaker connections before the ASD and use that as high level input into the Bit One?

Also do you have any info on how to take the central display unit out?

That's what I would do - high level straight into the DSP.
When you say take the central display out - why is this? Get to the wring?
Keep us posted. Greg

I managed to remove the central display, heater controls section and had a look at the actual head unit thats housed behind the main screen. Lots of connections. I took a bunch of photos so will host them on here in a bit.

Yes I want to see how its wired up, I think there is an optical connector there. Ideally need to see the wiring from a car with HK, and compare.

The Head Unit is the same in both systems. This is a Mini not a BMW. The system is low res. No Optical. You can look ask you want. 4 channels in each system. The HK just amps more and has more, better, speakers. I would patch before the asd. leave it hooked up though.

I never did a write-up on my previous install. I have a new car now. Here is a post I made on the ASD unit. I will have some helpful diagrams. I also have full stereo colored coding drawings somewhere but would have to dig. Let me know if this ii enough?

hi Gregory, I was wondering if you knew which colour coded wires come from the head unit that I can use as an input into my Bit One?

Yes I have a wiring diagram. Think I posted it before but here it is for the HK system. But the colors are the same. 4 channels from the HU.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Gregory, do you know which ones are Left Right Front and Rears? I think im only going to use the front signals but does the head unit send PDC sounds to the rears?

May have to use all four I think.
