Bump for Gregks question.
Started using dbpoweramp to convert our CDs. Works fast, and perfect, though the internet search for artwork is often lame. Google gets you more. 500x500 is perfect size for the XL HK display. Been using 192 cbr mp3.
Do other formats support artwork that are any better in that range? The mp3s are just fine, no complaints, just wondering.
Also Is there a way to make playlists manually so I can set up a structure for wife vs myself on the same USB stick? Trying to avoid putting itunes on my fast PC computer, and using Apples codec. My older 08Mini uses mp3s recorded to cds, so this keeps the file types the same.

FLAC will only work on the XL headunit, so keep that in mind.
External HDs can be hit or miss on if they work or not. How much music do you have that you're looking to hook up a 1 TB drive?! I've heard of people using as big as a 128GB flash drive.
Flash drives work best and they need to be FAT32 formatted, but I've heard of some people getting exFAT to work too. NTFS or HFS formatting will not work.
When you first plug the drive in, it will take the headunit several minutes to process everything, depending on how much music there is. It can process while you're driving though.

If someone can confirm my tests, please respond so that we can update this information as it is pretty important for those who want FLAC support but don't want to pay the Visual Boost XL premium ($2k technology package only for 2017).

Music quality is important to me so I did some testing on a 2016 Mini hardtop 4 door S with Visual Boost as well as Visual Boost XL and from what I can tell the information above is no longer valid. Both Visual Boost and Visual Boost XL were able to play FLAC without any issues from a 128gb flash drive formatted with exFat plugged in to the USB port. One thing that I'm not sure about is whether getting the Harmon Kardon upgrade matters (really it shouldn't, but maybe there's more to the HK upgrade than we know about?).
