Navigation/GPS PDA?
Anyone got this? I don't have Navi in my car and I am probably gonna go roadtripping through Europe this summer, I was on the path on building a carpc, It would be nice, but I don't know if it would be alot more problems then I expect.
There's always stuff that goes wrong wich you don't think about before you start using it, you know what I mean. ;-)
How have you guys solved the navigation issue? PDA?

I suppose you follow this. I have auto-dedicated Garmins, IQUEs and also the Mini Navigation system. They are all quite good. Check out this site.

a pda would be convenient to carry around with you, but I think it would be difficult to punch at something on your dash with a stick while driving.
But I think that if you need a single device to be both a gps and a computer, then the pda/gps is the way to go, but it is a compromise on both.
what is your budget? You could probably get a very nice gps and a very nice pda for the cost of building a car pc

I went the PDA route, but I already had a Dell Axim, so it was a no brainer. One added bonus is that if you put a big Compact Flash card in your PDA and have the Aux in jack, viola, instant MP3 player. Josh Wardell has a good writeup here: http://www.jwardell.com/mini/nav.html
I used the same mount as him, but instead of wiring through the dash, I have the euro parcel shelf and the wires just get tucked in there when not in use, that way everything can easily return to a stock look.

The PDA/GPS is definitely the way to go! All the benefits of a PDA PLUS GPS. I just couldn't see spending the money for a dedicated GPS unit. I've got a Dell Axim with Bluetooth so I purchased a Bluetooth GPS receiver which gets placed in the fixed portion of my sunroof, hence no ugly wires. The PDA is mounted with a Panavise mount to the right of my radio. I'm using Routis software which apparently is going to be or has been discontinued. Though iGuidance is supposed to be essetially the same thing but improved.
As Muidaq said, hook it up to the aux. input and you've got a GPS/MP3 player right there (a 1GB SD memory card helps). Plus, I like to listen to books on "tape" as I drive to work so the PDA will do that too. The nice thing is that you can have the MP3's or the book going and the GPS will just talk over it whenever it needs to call out a direction. Can't do that with a dedicated GPS unit.
