Navigation & Audio Accept Button...
#3
I don't think it's illegal, but the companies are just protecting themselves in our lawsuit-crazy country. Point being... you won't get in "trouble" with the law if you manage to disable the warning feature, but you're not likely to get ANY "official" help (ASK-MINI or dealer) to remove it.
I know that some people have "tricked" their NAV system into thinking it's in another location (like the UK), which removed the warning. This is done by downgrading & upgrading the NAV software in a particular way. The downsides are that the navigation system uses yards instead of feet, and that the size of a gallon is different in Europe, so your MPG calculations get screwed up.
There are other threads on the topic here, if you want to do it.

i cant believe that some people would go to lengths such as that just to not push one damn button. All those claculations get messed up, thatd make me mad, cause i use those a lot. Is it really that much of a pain to puch one button, come on. some people...no hard feelings though. were all fellow motorers

My car thinks it's motoring about in Jolly Old England, since I have been enjoying the British female voice ("You are NOT on a digitized road! You ARE the weakest link! Goodbye!") even since software upgrades to the Nav(currently 3/61) or the car (V.36). I have no plans on changing this if I can help it.
I would definitely change over the system to the one which implements the nag screen if I knew that each time I pressed the 'accept' button a lawyer would be noisily vaporized where they stood. I'd even stock up on ignition switches, keys and batteries and settle into my new full-time hobby.

Chrisnl, next time I'm in Boston, I'm gonna find you and kick your... oh, wait, there's a smiley there. Nevermind.
Greatbear - I had completely forgotten about 'The Weakest Link' - thanks for the chuckle. One of my favorite parts of the the BVH (British Voice Hack) is that it no longer tells me to make a 'legal' U turn. Apparently the Brits can make a U anytime they damn well please!

If you don't like having the Accept screen on your nav system and you don't want to put your nav system into "no language" mode in order to remove it, then these folks sell a module that will automatically remove the nag screen for you:
http://www.bmw-accept.com
The module is $100 (a bit pricey just to not have to click Accept button, but who am I to judge ) and it basically sends the click to the computer for you so that the Accept screen goes away each time you turn on your car.

If
the screen was touch it would be so much nicer. I can't tell you the amount of people who try to presss the accept button on the LCD and I'm like stoppppppppp its not a touch screen.
On a side not you notice the picture of the BMW nav screen it says the time and date on the bottom of the display. Wish the mini did that.

There should be an option to turn the accept screen off in the options menu. The fact that you have to go into the options to physically turn it off means that you at least know it is there. Geez...
Touch screen would be nice Howard, but a 2005 DVD on a 2005 MCS would be nicer! Whats up with the 2003 DVD that I have? Mega Geez....
Goat!

CD's? DVD, no swapping needed. You know, I was not crazy about the Nav idea either... but I always know where I am now! You know how it is... you are lost, you think to your self "where the hell am I?!" ... with the nav... you alays know.... and you know when you think "where is the nearest freeway?", well, it's right there on the map....

Wow, and I thought I spent allot on taxes, etc for my new car! Now, for $25 I would definately go for it... but $100?! Geesh... Maybe I will write and "encourage" him to sell it for less... or, maybe we can all do a bulk buy? Say, 20 units for $25 each? I wonder if he would go for that ?

Yes, there is:
You can flash the firmware to v.23, and then flash it to the current version v.24-something. The Nav computer no longer "knows" it's programmed for US, and the accept screen vanishes.
I did the following instructions, and they worked fine for me:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ighlight=voice
I ended up with an updated (faster) system without ACCEPT and with the British Voice.

So..... it does get rid of the "Nag" screen, but at a price I am not willing to pay considering I'm American? Did you do something differently to make it work the way everyone wants it - in US Standard units, with the British female voice, and without the "Nag" screen? If so, do tell!
On the other thread, they said the British female voice said 'motorway' instead of 'highway' - I thought I had the British voice this whole time, that's what everyone told me who has NAV! She talks about 'making a legal U-turn' and stuff, and they were saying on the other thread the British voice doesn't say that.... WHICH ONE IS IT?! Sounds British enough for me, though I've never traveled to the little guy's birthplace....
oh yeah, and you all with maps can keep that junk - i've been lost in my own hometown before after getting my driver's license, i have absolutely NO sense of direction!!!!!

The early Nav cars had the British voice (though I thought that was only '02 ) If she says 'legal U turn', then it's the American version, but if she talks British, no harm, no foul! If you're from the colonies (or the motherland), you'll know the difference.
The procedure Mr_edly talks about requires downreving the Nav, THEN upreving to get into 'no location' mode. I'm also curious as to whether this can be done without consequence.

From what I have read, there are two consequences to "tricking" the system into no-location mode:
1) The system will report the turns to you in "yards" ahead, not feet.
2) The MPG calculations will be incorrect, due to the differences in the American gallon and the Imperial gallon. The "no location" mode uses the imperial.
Personally, I'd rather live with the Accept button, and have the feet distances & correct MPG (for the USA anyway)!
