As I was driving to work today, my CD player started cutting out...not skipping mind you, but just cutting out all together. Right in the middle of a song it would just stop and do nothing. I pulled out the CD to check for scratches (none) and the CD itself was pretty hot. I wiped it off anyway and stuck it back in. Then, it did it again about half-way through the next song. Took it out, wiped it and stuck it back in. It made it through 3 more songs and then did it again. I just took out the CD (still pretty hot) and turned on the radio after that.

Is this a cleaning issue or is my CD player dying on me?

 

I had the same issue with my HK System (2003 MINI Cooper CVT, May build). Several others have experienced this, too.

When I brought it in for service, the dealer said it is a known issue, a bunch of bad amplifiers. It's the amp that is cutting out, not the head unit. They replaced the amplifier (located behind the "panel" above the right rear wheel well) and it has been OK ever since. You know it's the amp if your radio also cuts out from time to time. So try listening to the radio for a few days instead of the CD and if it cuts out, then yea, it's definitely a faulty amplifier.

Thanks...will do. Mine is a 2003 too, so you may be on to something! Still, kinda hoping it's just the CD player so I can get one of those new 05 heads that play MP3s!
