h/k tweeter replacement?
anyone know of a direct replacement (that is, no modification to make it work) for the tweeters? Or, better yet, where to get h/k tweeters to replace a blown tweeter? Anyone have one lying around gettting in your way you want to get rid of? If so, send a pm or reply here. The static/distortion of the blown tweeter is driving me nuts:impatient
I contacted Crutchfield but they had no information and h/k is closed for the day...

If you really need a new tweeter, you can find the part number here:
And your dealer, or Classic (with NAM discount) or any of the other fine dealers represented here on NAM can help you get it.
However, the H/K system is famous for a vibration that sounds much like distortion you might get from a damaged speaker (is your tweeter completely dead?). I used self-adhesive felt that I bought at a craft store and cut strips to put around the speaker on the door itself where the speaker bezel contacts the inside of the speaker grill (attached to the door interior panel). My "blown" speaker was cured! I did this on both doors for good measure and lined the inside of the doors with dynamat type material while I had it open and it sounds great.
I wouldn't recommend replacing the tweeter with a non-oem part unless you remove the H/K and go aftermarket all around. Most OEM car systems are highly tuned to match the amps/eq/speaker combination and the drivers are often very different in sensitivity/response than general purpose aftermarket drivers.

Is it as easy as you make it sound or will a novice, like me, be over my head attempting to take off the panel. It's not really the process of taking it off that scares me it is screwing something up while it's apart.
I'm not sure if the speaker is actually blown or not but if the tweeter is covered with my hand, everything sounds great. It just appeared last week without me doing any loud listening (or no more so than normal). The other tweeter sounds OK.
Thanks again for your help. Doing stuff like this is intimidating to me since I've never been taught how to do it.

The speaker cover just pops off. I would remove the cover first and see how the tweeter sounds. If it's fine with the cover off then you just need to fix the cover/tweeter interface. It's possible that the tweeter has come out of the holder and is making contact with the cover. Just push the tweeter back into the holder if that's the problem.
If the door panel needs to come off it's not a big deal. The top of the door panel pulls straight out once you have the screws out. One of the screws is behind the clear reflector at the top of the door...which just pops out with a small straight slot.

The mid/tweeter cover should just pull off without removing the whole door panel.
Make sure you put your ear up to the speaker when you hear what you think is a blown speaker, to be sure which speaker is coming from. It's very common that the door panel is in fact rattling and the speakers are fine.
I have details and instructions here:

Well, after much hesitation and procrastination, I pulled on the tweeter/door handle surround and it came off pretty easily. The bad news is that the speaker is crackling and sounds bad. I guess I will order a new one.
Can I buy just one or do they come in pairs? My bet is that I'll have to purchase two to replace the one. Anyway, thanks for the help.
