R50/53 Do MCSs get better gas mileage than the standard Cooper?

good site
there is a site called myautolog.com that I use to record my mileage.
for a very small annual cost, you can do yours as well.
the cool thing is you can compare your car against the same make and model, different models, and other makes as well.
I have been on it for 2.5 years and it is nice to have the historical view of performance.
FYI, my MC on a road trip from Minneapolis to Detroit & back last week averaged 40MPG. Standard transmission & cruise control for 70% of the time. Outstanding!
Motor on.

Long long drive, minimal traffic, keep below 70 ... I would have got >500 miles but on the same tank I did Palo Dura Canyon which reduced my average!
And I'm sorry, my memories not perfect - it was only 453 miles

I've gotten 33-34mpg (37 indicated on OBC) in my MCS. It is an '02 with the higher gears. The MC will get better mileage than the MCS just due to the fact that the MCS has to spin that supercharger all the time. The MCS also has a lower compression ratio to handle the boost so it's not going to be as efficient when it's just cruising.

Best run for me on tank, Which is only when i make the run to the Dragon and back. Is approx 526 miles from my Door step to the Microtel at the Dragon and i still have room to drive for about another 20 miles. I've Done this with Stock and 15% Pulley installed. Its dropped to mid to upper 400's when i installed the Bigger 400 injectors.

Just curious, why would you go to site and pay to record your mileage? I keep mine on an Excel spreadsheet, along with a log of all my maintenance.
Whoever buys my car will get a LOT of receipts.
BTW, I typically get 400 miles to a tank on my '05 S. (Ideal driving conditions on my commute.)

Our first mini was a MC and then we got a MCS, the MC definitely gets better gas mileage, but the MCS is waaay more fun . On the interstate, we usually get between 29 - 31 mpg and in the city I usually average around 24 - 25 mpg the hubby only averages around 22 city, he obviously has more spirited driving habits

I routinely get about 460 per tank with my MC. A couple tanks ago I did the math at the fillup and got 41mpg Lately I've been getting incredible mileage. Probably cause I'm rarely above 65mph.

The answer will depend on which transmission and which driver over which driving setting.
The best mpg for the Cooper S will come from the newest R56 with 16" wheels and manual transmission and cruise control.
Before that for the MCS it was R53 MCS with 16" wheels and manual transmission plus cruise control.
The best standard Cooper or MC would be the newest R56 MC with manual transmission and cruise control with 15" wheels.
Comparing the newest R56 (I know this forum is coupe talk 2002-2006) the best mpg goes to the MC not MCS so that is no argument.
Looking at the older MC if you got the CVT it didn't do so well with mpg esp in the city where many owners got about 20. In the city many MCS with manual transmission got about 20-25 mpg so in that comparison the MCS did do better than a standard Cooper with CVT.
Comparing the MC with manual transmission to the same car with CVT shows mpg was much better and probably the best with the manual 5 speed MC.
If you drive mostly highway miles you can get 40 mpg from the base MC with manual transmission and 15" wheels.
If you drive mostly highway with a manual MCS you can get about 33+ mpg at best.
If you have a modded MCS with 15" low rolling resistance wheels you might get as high as 29+ mpg on the highway. I've done it but it's murder on your self restraint. You have to tell yourself that for a certain length of time you are driving slowly "as an experiment". It's like serving time.
So, I can get about 25+ mpg is daily driving and at best about 28-29 in highway using a 6 speed MCS set up for track and autocross and using 15" street wheels/rubber no cruise control.
Are there some MC owners out there that don't get 25 mpg in their real driving? Certainly there are but there are very many that do better than 30 mpg.

My '06 MC 5-speed gets between 29-31 mpg in pure city driving, and that's with me not being as easy on the gas as I tell myself I should be. On highway trips, not being conservative speed-wise, I've gotten a best of 38 mpg so far (and that was not using cruise control because it was storming the whole time).

Well, on my current tank, I'm getting a whopping 16.3 MPG and quite frankly, it's bugging me! Now, this is been city driving only, on the hilly streets of San Francisco.
Are there any other SF people here that could share their mileage? I only have 1800 miles on the car so far; will it get better or do y'all think there might be something wrong with my car?

Up hill coming and going
I like it...go the other way
I have kept records on mileage from the first day on my 06 MCS.
MPG took a gradual increase from day 1 for about 3 months and 3200 miles
where it leveled out at 28.5 MPG. Considering the terrain in SF your mileage is probably OK this soon. Gunning it up the hills does not equal coast down the other side so it will be up hill both ways. Good Luck
