Display problem? I need a MiniGenius

To Whomever:

I'm new at this, but let the record show, I HAVE RTFM! If the answer is in there, I can't find it.

Question concerns the tachometer dial, specifically the display above the odometer (mls) which normally indicates the mls remaining until refuel.
What it is, is, that a few days ago, when I lit-up the engine, instead of mls to refuel, I saw: ---.-mpg. When I began to roll, the dashes were replaced with numbers which change each second, apparently at random, until I stop, when the dashes reappear. Now, I've been living a good clean life, and I love my new Mini, but what's going on here? What's it trying to tell me? This Mini is the first car I've owned which is more intelligent than I am, and it kind of scares me. I hope there's some Mini-Scientist out there who can help me.

Average miles per gallon...Push the BC button a couple of times to get it back onto the Fuel to empty range.

Actually, that display would be the instantaneous MPG. Floor the accelerator, and watch the number drop into the low teens or single digits. Drive like a grandmother at highway speeds, and you'll likely see it hovering around the 30's.

You'll also likely see (depending on options):
- Average MPG
- Average speed
- Instantaneous speed
- Outside temperature
- Miles until empty (which will change depending on how you drive)

Have fun!

I don't have instantaneous speed in my rotation. Is that something that became available after the '02?

I *think* I remember hearing that they added it in somewhere in the late '02s - '03s. And if you don't have the OBC option installed, you'll miss out on most of the displays. Don't remember which ones though.

Oh, and if you have the Nav or Chrono pack options installed, no instant speed for you.

You can get it added

I got my 05 OBC functions added at the MINI Dealer. If you have the hardware: Stalk button that cycles SPEED and Outside TEMP in your tach display, you can get the entire OBC functions as listed above.

See this thread https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...t=OBC+Retrofit

My MINI Dealer "Ottos" does the upgrade for $75 fixed fee.

So, I have the OBC displayed on the tach and the cycling button on my turn signal stalk. All I need to do is ask the MINI service tech to enable it when I am next there? My '02 build month was June. Perhaps it was before the feature was added?

That sounds way to easy.

Yeah it does!

I haven't personally heard it being added retroactively, but it can't hurt to ask!

Let us know how it works out!

yeah, I'm pretty sure if you search you'll find out how to enable the OBC without having purchased it, I believe it's already built into the car, it just has to be enabled.

I also have an '02 (September build date). I was told the instantaneous speed display was introduced in the '04s and up.
