 Last week I reported on a couple of problems I'd had on a recent trip to New England.

The car is now at Tate Mini in Annapolis for warranty work. But I had to also solve a third annoying problem -- PEELING PAINT.

As I was cleaning the car after the trip, I looked closely at the area around the "Shark's Fin" GPS antenna on the roof. To my horror, this is what I found:

I'll report back what I learn when the car returns from Tate.

No peeling paint problems here to speak of. Sorry about your damaged roof. I looks like that part of the roof has been exposed to some corrosive chemicals...hope they can find the cause for it.

Yikes! Not good at all.

It looks like there was surface contamination under the clearcoat around the mounting hole. I have heard of cases where various materials in contact with painted or clearcoated surfaces (in this case the rubber seal around the GPS antenna) have reacted with the paint/clearcoat causing peeling. I have DS on the roof as well as NAV, and so far no trouble. It's something I will be on the lookout for in the future however.

Best of luck in getting a satisfactory solution!

Damn, that's nasty looking. Hope MINI resolves the problem for you. This is the first one I've seen/heard.

It also looks to me like a bad body shop repair.

Don't think so. The rear hatch was replaced after a big SUV backed into it at Xmas time, but they shouldn't have done anything to the roof.

Hmmm, I wonder if the body shop did something that you didn't know about until this peeling clearcoat incident...

Looks like they oversprayed some clearcoat onto the roof while painting the hatch.

The picture makes it look like it was primarily to the rear of the antenae. Correct? Do you hand wash your MINI or take it thru a mechanical car wash? Reason I ask is that my first gut reaction to your picture was that it was due to a mechanical car wash pressing on the antenae and cause the roof to buckle enough to cause the paint to flake off. Very possible, but let's hope not, as that would mean no warranty coverage as it was due to owner's "abuse" so to speak. Sorry.

Nope -- the picture was of the left side looking forward. Don't use the mechanical washers, though I have used the squirter jet type when on a trip.

The car is at the garage now. I may see it Thursday, or it may have to wait until next week since this weekend is a 3-day holiday. Will report back then.
