R50/53 Show us your Factory Errors/Goof ups/Flaws!
#1
After many thousands of MINIs built so far there are many instances of the Factory messing up and installing
parts in a non standard way. My dealer was telling me of several he remembers and we only have sold 550 so far in my area. Some examples:
White roof but black mirror covers.
MCS with MC front bumper or any wrong body part
Wrong interior not usually available
Wrong wheels not usually available
Wrong front grille part
Mismatch of door panels to dash- Alloy patina vs anthracite
Anyone know of or have pictures of a rare or unusual MINI combination due to a factory error?
Please post!

Personally. . .
I'd love to get a mess up that didn't matter much. Not the MINI ONE Engine in my MCS, I mean cosmetic.
Like Ok, give me the black mirror covers and I'd love having the ONLY ONE that has it that way.
Or the interior in a combo that isn't offered but I HAVE IT.
well, that's ok with me.
In fact that's pretty cool!

I do I do I do.. (and am still waiting for the fix...) on the driver's side, it has a MC 'running board', and on the passengers side it's the MCS part....
Once the gallery is back up, do a search for 'rooftop', and the cr/w MCS is the one with the odd part...

OK, here's one...
When my car was in for service the other day, I mentioned that my boot power outlet (I have a 2002) did not seem to be working. I'd never actually gotten it to work, so I figured I'd have the service guys check it out.
My car was in for a sunroof cassette replacment (BIG job), so I wasn't surprised that they were working on the car for about 4 hours. But when I spoke to the mechanic at delivery, he told me that he'd also spent over an hour on the boot power outlet! Seems that MINI/BMW did not supply a schematic for the outlet (it's just missing from the current tech CD)...so when he discovered the outlet was indeed dead, he had to trace the wiring back to the fuse panel. That involved taking apart the wiring harness for the entire left side of the car...testing each wire/junction as he went along to see where things led and to see if there were any faults. This apparently took well over an hour. Anyhow, he gets all the way back to the relay panel and discovers that the factory FORGOT to install a rear boot power outlet relay for my car. He pops one in and we're good to go.
Next time, he may choose to start at the relay end...

>>I can not remember who it was but someone here got there MINI in January and it came with MINI ONE door sills instead of MINI Cooper Sills . Pretty cool goof up. Had pictures here on the site.

It was LouiefromStLou that had the sills.

>>>>>>I got the british cubby hole, but I am replacing it soon with the parcel shelf.

I think I read somewhere that for the US that cubby part was illegal- cannot be imported due to danger to knee in case of crash or something.
Go to http://www.r53w11.com/carparts.htm
Past the euro parcel shelf install see more info on this -

>>No goof ups on the car, but ours came with a full set of wiper arms, blades, and caps and hardware in the boot. The dealer didn't know what to do with them, so he left them in the boot and we drove away with them.
They fit nicely on those little pegs that stick out just below the windshield.

Not a major problem, and the dealer fixed it, but my MCS came with the wrong color wheels on it. I ordered white s-lites, and it showed on the order submitted to the factory and what they sent back, but silver s-lites were on instead. I got the best of both worlds, and got to try out both wheels before making a decision as to which to get.

>>That cubby hole is cool. What is that smaller hole next to it. Looks like
>>a knock out for a toggle switch or something.
>>Where can I get one of those?
The dash part has no known part number so it cannot be ordered. For the person that has the part- try checking to see if the part number is stamped on it somewhere and post it.
The small rectangular piece is the cover for the opening that is used in europe for the toggle switch for the Rally driving lights. See part 14 in the drawing. The euro parcel shelf also has this same part.

I keep trying to put them on, but they won't fit over the ones already installed. A bigger hammer perhaps?

>>About the British Cubby panel: how come the U.S. versions don't come with the toggle switch hole for the rally lights? I don't get it. Also...a question arises that had never crossed my mind before. Are parcel shelves compatible with rally light switches?
All US MINIs come with the solid knee bolster that lies under the steering wheel. There is no provision for the light toggle switch in that part hence- you see no rectangular opening.
In the euro parcel shelf and this other cubby knee panel you see the hole for the switch. The switch opening is generic and can be used for any purpose that fits this opening. Maybe it is the rear fog light, the rally light, an alarm light or other switch that can be fitted there. Even an aux audio input.
I don't think that MINI intentionally left out the capacity for the switch opening but rather I read that the switch was used maybe for the rear fog light option to turn it on in case of fog and since the US MINI has no working rear fog light then no switch opening is needed.
