R50/53 Why spend so much on your cabin air filter? Alternative here
#104
Thoroughly Modern MiniI just got mine in the mail today. I can't wait to change it and get rid of the stinky socks smell inside!
It works like a charm, and the dryer sheets are built to have air flow through them, so no risk.. just make sure its set up as follows:
outside air -> dryersheet -> filter -> vent
otherwise the dryersheet will get blown into your vent system, which could be a problem

Ok, finally found the time to install my filter...
-first off, use a flashlight the first time you do this.
It's hard to see upside down, and you don't want to break the tabs off the plastic cover.
-when you pull out the filter, have the plastic bag that the new filter came in handy. My old one was filled with gunk.
-look for the arrow showing air flow on the end of the filter; you want to make sure you put it in right.
-since the filter curves up and back into the vent system, don't be afraid to push it up and in.
Keep the edges flat on the filter housing, and it should slide right in place.
Big difference! I run re-circ air almost all the time to avoid fumes and dust...
I think I'll go to a 9-month cycle from here on in.
thanks again Xymox for the heads up!

TYC is a quality aftermarket (& OEM) company that will stand behind their products. We've been selling their cooling & lighting products for years. I've seen their filter line during a tour of one of their distribution centers and would not hesitate in using the product.

So it's time for a new cabin air filter, your MINI is beginning to smell like a gym locker room. I pulled my cabin air filter and nearly wretched at the ghastly sight of it. Utterly filthy. FYI, you're *suppose* to change them every 12 mo./12,000 miles.
So I hit the usual MINI places. OutMotoring prefers to charge you $42.95 (which may not even be carbon activated). And MiniMania would like to charge you $56.95 for a carbon activated cabin air filter. Not likely!
I found a brilliant alternative. The site is A to Z Autolights ( www.atozautolights.com ). They carry the OEM replacement made by the company TYC. Not only is it nearly identical to the OEM (3M Company) replacement, but it's carbon activated too! And the cost? $8.31.
Just looking out for my fellow thrifty motorists.

I sent them an email asking if they have the products I'm looking for. Will report back as soon as I find out.

Interesting, I finally got around to trying to change this, mine looks nothing like the replacement. The original has no plastic on it, and the new one with the plastic didnt want to fit as nicely. I gave up and put the original back in since it was clean and fit better.

I received my filter last week and installed it on the weekend. I definitely suggest using some type of lubricant when putting in the new filter. My old one was extremely dirty and was obviously hindering air flow. I was very impressed with the entire process. FYI, I'm in Canada and you have to phone directly to place an order.
I'm thinking of replacing the filter twice a year from now on.
