R50/53 The Perfect Radar Detector Set Up for the MINI!
#1
This idea is not new. I originally saw a post by Ches on Mini2.com forums with this similar set up but I feel I have simplified the approach.

When I set out to do this I wanted simple and economical. Did research on detectors here: Speedzones
$169.99 (buy.com) for the Bel v940 and it performs similar to the big boys.
No wires to front of car, just plug it in to the accessory outlet in the trunk. Set the detector to the settings you prefer. Bel has a nice feature called "autoscan" that chooses sensitivity levels depending on radar environment. Also, an "automute" feature that mutes the alarm to a minor clicking sound after initial loud beep.
What this means is you don't have fool with changing settings while driving (which you couldn't with this set up.)
Dectector is velcroed to parcel shelf, easy. The only drawback is I had to block the rear laser detection sensor when covering it. Very minor sacrifice.
Check out pictures here: Easy set up
I tested it last night. Picked up "instant on" Ka (voice identificaton feature) at a 90 degree angle reflecting off of cars getting zapped about 300 yards away in a city enviroment. Then drove straight at the cop and he zapped me from about 50 yards and all hell broke loose with the Ka alarm. I knew he was there long before he zapped me due to reflections.
Will continue testing on highway and such but "instant on" Ka is usually the most difficult and very common these days, so I would say it has passed the test!
