Most insurance companies replace windshields free if damaged. Travelers Insurance replaced mine with no deductible. Call yours

Depends on the state....

in CA, it's treated just like any other damaged part of the car, and deductables apply. Florida is another state with insurance coverage of windshields, but it's far from a national policy...

I never heard of an insurance company waiving the deductible while replacing windshields. I'd love to talk to the person who came up with that idea and find out what they were thinking.

Anyhow... Twister, consider yourself lucky if yours does that.

Ten years ago, or so, it became fairly common practice to waive the deductible to REPAIR the windshield. The industry thought it would save them money in the long run... small money to repair a chip before it became a crack and the windshield needed to be replaced. But... didn't work out that way and most companies have now stopped waiving the comp deductible for repairs.

And Niki... if you have the auto rain sensing wipers, add about $200 to the cost of the windshield. You're looking at more like $400-700.

Like I said...

it varies by state. I think the logic is that damaged windshield scatter light and this leads to reduced visibility at night. With the reduced visibility comes increased risk of accidents and the like.

If your state law requires low cost replacement via insurance, all will offer it, if they don't, none will.

Matt

And in some states, the State Patrol will pull you over and cite you for a cracked windshield (This state, for example). If (and this is based on the Officers judgment) it interferes with your view. (Yessir, Officer, sir. I'll get it fixed right away, sir.)

dealer in Irvine, CA charged me $900 to replace mine. I paid $100 deductable to insurance. If you're still under warranty and its cracked do a ballpoint pen test along the crack. Any pits along the crack then they'll claim crack is caused by stone impact. However, if there are no pits along the crack then mini has a lot of bad history with windshields cracking as they're not that strong and that should be covered by warranty. There a real big thread on it under warranty section.

If you have rain sensors expect to pay around $450 to $500. If it is a regular windshield more around $250 to $300 if you know someone who will hook you up. I just replaced my windshield in March :(.....I work at a bank, and apparently I made one of my customer's angry because I would not do a fee reversal for them so they chucked a rock at my windshield and busted it while I was working.....it was soo not cool. My deductable for insurance was 500 so I just paid out of pocket. I had a friend who hooked me up and only charged me 260 though.

I live in CA and I too have had windshields replaced by insurance without any charge to me. I've had this experience with 21st Century and AAA. Soo... I think it may not necessarily be a state thing, but possibly with the insurance company and your coverage (don't know for sure). These days they prefer to repair windshields as much as possible, as opposed to replacing them.

or have even more fun by throwing a rock at your windshield!

Florida law

22. My front windshield was broken. I have comprehensive coverage with a deductible. Will I have to pay the deductible before the company pays for the replacement of my windshield?
No. Florida Statute 627.7288 states that the deductible shall not apply to windshield damages.

In South Carolina there is also automatic replacement of a cracked windshield with no deductible. Our original was cracked with a thrown rock on the Interstate and it was replaced with a PPG for $380 (entirely paid for by insurance).
