I hold in my hand a USA formatted DVD of the original 1969 "Italian Job."
It arrived today on the desk of the DVD reviewer at the newspaper where I work.

The hype on the box of the Paramount Special Collector's Edition says it digitally remastered and remixed in 5.1 surround sound.
The disc has the 99-minute color movie plus more than two hours of new and exclusive bonus features, it says, including producer Michaels Deeley's commentary, three "making it" dcumentaries, the deleted scene with commentary and the theatical and re-release trailers.

The reviewer says the public release date for both the original and this year's remake is Oct. 7.

I think Hollywood ruined what is a great film. In fact it is possibly the greatest ever film. I'm talking about the original Italian Job being the best.

"The greatest film ever"? Whoa, that's quite a claim. I did enjoy the original IJ, as I did the remake. However, neither film make it into MGC's pantheon of greatest movies ever made. In fact, IJ doesn't even make my list for greatest car movie:
Grand Prix
Lemans
Bullitt
Vanishing Point

I do appreciate your comments, the original IJ is a very entertaining film with a plethora of industry talent all performing up to their own high standards.

"As I did the remake."

I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but it isn't a remake. I saw it today and it was heavy. But that still doesn't match up to The Italian Job [classic]

Having just seen it this year, I wasn't real fond of the original film. The cutting/camera technique/direction was very period. Cinematic conventions change...and think the new film is much more accessible.

That said, I think it is more respectful to leave the original film as a unique entity and not do an exact remake. The original film had so many elements that were products of the time. I think the new IJ does an admirable job of creating a new version while resonating with the original. Just my opinion...

I plan to Add IJ and the new IJ to my collection of DVDs asap!
I should play the new IJ DVD in my MINI as I cruise around. The sound track is pretty good. (I try not to be watching if I am the driver)

My best friend from England picked up a european version of the DVD for me but did not know that it would not play on an american DVD player! So frustrating yesterday when we tried to watch it!

Time to make my order from Amazon!

Fortunately, I have a copied VHS version but want to see it on DVD ASAP!

No one mentioned the soundtrack from the original IJ. Now, what was that catchy little tune at the end of the movie?

The original Italian Job is still the original Italian Job. Hollywood never touched it. Furthermore, despite the presence of Minis and our natural affinity for the film, the Italian Job is a cute little B movie and nothing more. Get real.

As for the quality of the new movie, that might be your expert and apparently unbiased opinion, but it's hardly the consensus opinion. I ordered both films from Amazon and look forward to watching them both again.

"The greatest film ever"?

The original is so dreadfully bad, I had to fast forward to get to the MINI scenes and be done with it. The new release at least has an interesting plot and decent acting and the MINI scenes are better...but neither holds a candle to Bullet or French Connection IMO

Classic Mini VS New MINI !!!

I enjoyed the classic movie - I've always been a Michael Caine fan !!

I thoroughly enjoyed the new MINI version as well. For me they are totaly different sharing only the name. ( I've always been a Charlize Theron fan !! )

I hope you enjoy both !!

Best Regards,
Ron

My Netflix queue still says release date unknown. I placed my order for it months and months ago. I did watch it years ago but honestly don't recall much about it (well except the plot of course).

Hey Charlie_Croker, let's talk about your signature line after tomorrow shall we?

Great greatest list, MCG... But let's not forget "The Blues Brothers!" Tee hee! All those Chrysler K-Cars blasting through ghost-malls...hilarious! Great stunt-driving! Great soundtrack!! And....ridiculously silly...which makes it an obvious choice for my list! Ha ha ha!

" the Italian Job is a cute little B movie and nothing more" ...Who said that?!? Them's fightin werds!

... As an old Classic pilot from way back, the original IJ is a Classic too! ... ok, so we hedge our bets by calling it a "cult" classic ... but nevertheless, with a healty dose of '60's British culture and plenty of real-life Mini antics, that film is de rigueur for anyone who who professes to be anything close to an affectionado of the Issigonian Arts ...
