Steering wheel

can a steering wheel with controls be installed in a mini that previously had steering wheel controls? and would the steering wheel controls work with the stock radio?

Sure you can. I believe everything is pre-wired already but you have to purchase the parts and/or new steering wheel with the MFSW buttons. Some people have switched from 3 spoke to 2 spoke steering wheels and viceversa.

Go to: www.realoem.com to get the part numbers required for the retrofit kits. I would estimate the cost of retrofitting (plus labor) between $700-$1000.

See if this is worth it to you.

Which steering wheel do you have now? 3 or 2 spoker? MFSW buttons or not?

I think you can buy the MFSW button inserts for your 3 spoker, that is, if you want to retain it.

I believe that you are unable to put a multi-function steering wheel in a vehicle that did not originally come with it.

When you put the steering wheel in, there is a spinning wire-harness that the horn, and I am assuming, the multi-function buttons, plug into. If you didn't already have the multi-function buttons in there, there is not a place to plug the control's wires into.

Anybody correct me if I am wrong, however, I do beleive that I remembered properly.

Go to www.realoem.com. In there you can see the schematics of the parts and the part numbers. With those in hand you can call the dealer or any MINI/BMW aftermarket OEM parts supplier for pricing and further information. I think you need to do your homework and dig up a little for this one.

RealOEM lists a multi-function retrofit kit:
