I'm walking into work, yet brake lights stay on

Brake light Weirdness I have noticed several times since new -I arrive at point B and turn off the lights (if they're even on), then I turn off the car, then i set the brake, get out and lock via key fob. Once that is done the brake lights at the rear are still ON...

Sometimes i am sure this has happened and i have not noticed. Other times I catch it and fix it by either starting the engine and turning off again, or once even by releasing and resetting the parking brake lever. Once a co-worker came by in the office and asked me "if you drive that red Minicooper you left your lights on"...

Anybody know whats' up with that? Seen it before?

Brake light switch

The Bentley manual has a picture of the brake light switch on page 340-5> Here is what it says: Brake light switch, mounted to the pedal cluster support bracket, is a Hall effect sensor supplying brake application information to the ABS control module. I had a similar problem in my old Chevy PU some years ago that was traced to exactly such a sensor.

I have had this very same problem... although it hasn't happened recently. I now have the habit of taking a quick peek at the tail lights to see if they are on. Since it hasn't continued I haven't looked into it any further. I imagine it's only a matter of time before I see it again.

Cool, thanks MimiNut. I covet your manual.
