R50/53 Just picked up my Italian Job DVD set!

There are "good" coupons attached to some of the IJ DVDs.
Just bought both DVDs separately from Best Buy yesterday (US). The combo (29.99) and single original (14.99) did not have coupons attached. I opened the coupons on the 2003 IJ. Free DVD offer includes the original. Worth it to return and send off coupon to get original, plus Best Buy has a 15% off DVDs this weekend.
Also WIN a MINI promo, you have to open the package to get to it, the winner is actually printed on the DVD and needs to be sent in entirety. Guess this is a small price to pay for the real thing. My norm is never winning anything....will plan on watching IJ again.

>>jds-- So it does feature classic minis? Is it, and does it have that British '60's feel? I know nothing about this movie. Any stars we know?
It was the inspiration for the 2003 "remake" of the The Italian Job. It was made in 1969 in Britain. The director had just come from filming Bullitt. It stars Michael Caine thirty four years younger.
It towers over the remake.

>>Best Buy has a sale for both DVDs (Original and Remake) in widescreen for $29.99, you can't beat that price.
Yes you can....lowest price is at COSTCO.
Got the original for $12.99, the remake for $13.59 ($17.59 - $4 rebate)
Grand Total = $26.58 + tax.
[also - on the Remake, Costco sells the Full-Screen (blue cover) and the Wide-Screen (red cover) versions]

Yes, the original IJ has three Mini Cooper Ss...red, white, and blue. They're the getaway cars for the heist. There is an early "driver training" scene with some Mini stunts (2-wheelin') and then the whole chase scene...through sidewalk cafes, down stairs, a roof jump, storm culverts, car dealership, etc, etc....lots of fun! My favorite is when the 3 Minis come flying over the church stairs chased by the police. Of course, a real young Michael Caine is in the film, as is Benny Hill (comedian...might not remember him), and Noel Coward (who, frankly I don't know that well...a British star no doubt). The ending is a real cliff-hanger! The film's plot is very different from the recent version...the music, direction, editing are VERY period. The Brits LOVE this movie!!!

I've noticed that Amazon has a "gift set" with both versions... I have no problem buying both separate DVDs but I was wondering - which get you more cool stuff ?(extra feature DVDs, better packaging etc) - Buying the "gift set" or each DVD in its own box? I know this sounds stupid...but I was just curious.

>>Veak,
>>
>>The gift set includes the same DVDs as if buying them separate. Set will save you a couple of $. Only reason I decided to got them separately was because of the coupons on the single 2003 IJ DVD and Free MINI entry. Choices for a free DVD are limited, not a big deal.
Thanks

Amazon had mine to me by Wednesday.
Anyone with the original needs to check out the deleted scenes in special features for the Blue Danube Mini-Dance scene at the ice rink.
From IMDB - "They filmed a scene for part of the Mini Cooper chase sequence on an ice rink, with the cars gliding past each other. The scene was cut for timing reasons, but has been kept in immaculate condition and can be seen in the Making Of The Italian Job documentary, which can be seen on the video and DVD."
When you see it, it's almost Kubrickian.

So for the fans of the original Italian Job, have a look at the scene where the cars are dumped off a cliff (I won't say where in the film so as not to spoil the fun for those who haven't seen it yet). Recall the original S had twin gas tanks, check the ones going off the cliff. Even they couldn't bring themselves to trash a real S.
I know, I'm sad, but hey this is one of my faves.
